The New MB's actually send a message to MB and they can access the Fault Codes Data etc via "The Cloud" wherever the fuck "The Cloud" may be, usually over the owners head

One of my first questions when calling for a private car "is the logbook in your name" and when I get the answer, usually in an Asian accent "no, I am selling for my uncle" or "erm, nah, when I bought the car yeah, I never got the name transferred over to me" Yeah, ok sunshine.

Good advice as ever. I'd add to it that you shouldn't listen to people saying you can't do it or the good old days are gone or it's not like it was. Rory off here said numerous times to me and others for that matter, to "just work harder than everyone else" and it's true. Instead of moaning about something not happening, work harder etc. If you have your own successful business then you no doubt have this mentality anyway. There are a couple of sayings I like. One from Gary Player, the American Golfer; The harder I practice, the luckier I get" The other, supposedly George Bernard Shaw; "People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it" Good luck.

We've had a couple of Cooper S They've all felt totally different to drive, even though they were all roughly the same year and mileage. All have been a pain to sell, with little margins. The lower end of your budget, you are buying a high performance hot hatch (read - thrashed) and as they are quite cheap nowadays, it's previous owner is more likely to have run it on a shoestring. They are the only cars that we have had people view each single one and walk away from. No faults with the cars - need to check insurance / ask the wife/mum/dad/dog/etc. All other cars, almost always sell on the first viewing. Don't know a huge amount about them, think the engines and boxes are pretty solid. Rear wishbone bushes are pricey to replace. ABS Sensors, Window Motors I think are pretty common too. The pre-07 shape (R53) Supercharged is the better. The turbo ones from 07 on have engine troubles. Great fun to drive though! - Wouldn't buy another to retail.

From our experience there is no downside to self administering. If you sell lots of stuff to people outside of your local area it might be different.

If the guy is a legal then he would know his rights, he would also know he does have to show due dilligence on collection re (misdescription), plus a load more he should of done. The reason I say go legal straight away is because you need to show him you arn't a walkover.

Why? There's already one dealer on here (well, part dealer, full time mechanic god, Sir Dave of Scotland) who was unaware of the facts so if a couple of other dealers on here get educated it can't be a bad thing. If I know about it and I'm a proverbial pup, everyone should know it. And yes, as you have pointed out, trying to keep things "secret" from the entire internet is a futile task. In any case, I think people should come on here and see that most of us do the job right, know what we're talking about etc. It inspires consumer confidence in the industry.

I’ve been driving almost 30yrs & I’m sure consumables such as brake pads, discs, wipers & tyres are cheaper now than they ever were (for run of the mill cars). Two 225/65/17 cheapie Fulda tyres for a CRV yesterday - fitted, balanced, valves etc. -£92+VAT & it’s the same price for a private punter cos I just book them in via the Internet. I had to put a couple of wheelbarrow tyres onto a VW Fox a month or so ago - I think £28+VAT each, I’m sure I paid about £30 each decades ago for a Chevette. A couple of Champion wipers - £4. Apparently ‘my’ MOT station gets cheapo wiper blades for under £1 each. How on earth anyone makes a profit after manufacture, delivery, wholesaler & retailer is beyond me.

i have 4 cheap laptops and i have ista, diagbox, vagcom, Renault clip, Vauxhall, ids, star and my favourite.....autocom which i use most. In my experience I find it a lot easier to have the right tools for the job. I even had to lend my £100 laptop to my garage the other day as they could not program injectors on a transit connect with the snap on tool they have.
