Class 4 or Class 7 MOT?

Hi folks got a van in for MOT and the chap at the garage says its class 7.

Weight of van is bang on 3000kg. 

He thinks its class 4 only if upto 3ton but mine is 3 ton.

The old MOT papers all show class 4

I am in for a retest. I think its only a few quids difference but grandad at the mot station thinks he knows best. 

Does it make a difference at all?

Take it to another mot centre? 

If it’s max weight inc payload is 3 ton it’s class 4. 

If it’s 3-3.5 ton it’s a class 7.

I read through Gov website and it is my opinion that it can be tested as a 4 or a 7.

Is it more than 7 seats ?

IIRC I once got asked that on my V Class test, that has a double Seat in the front left, and 5 in the back, maybe the Seats make a difference, but this was a few years ago before the rule changes last year

I just took one of the rear seats out at test time, they un latch really easy

We had a LWB Vivaro, all prev MOT's had been class 4 but logbook weight was 3030kg and garage we took to advised that it was Class 7.

Sorted it.

Its new the rules.

Old chap said its N1 but N1 there are two types.

Van upto 3000kg is N1 class 4

Van 3001kg to 3500kg is N1 class 7

Talk about confusion!

He put it down to class 4 but in reality makes no difference as the new certs just show N1 anyway. My worry was that if my previous mot certs show class 4 a billy might ask me why have you changed it to class 7!
