A Place to whinge about cars

Recommended Posts

Im gonna kick off with this one,

Sold a MK5 Mondeo to a regular customer, phoned up asking us to look at why the heated front windscreen wasn't working.

Googled it first and found several people mentioning about battery not being charged up enough, so as soon as it came in i plugged it into the diagnostic machine and noticed that battery charge was at 45% and the battery was 1145 days old. Told it the car had a new battery installed (even though we didn't change it) and then the battery charge went immediately to 78% and the heated screen started working!

I'm glad we go out mitts on it and not the main stealers, where no doubt it would have got:-

2 Hours Diagnostic

One New battery

Software update

£465 all in (guestimate)

You could have chucked a battery on for the poor sod if he's a regular customer of yours... they will just be twice as annoyed when it stops again in a week or two in this cold weather.

The battery was fine, it was the cars presumption/calculations that the battery was not holding a good charge.

At £165 a pop i don't think there would be many seasoned traders replacing a battery on a car starts on a -5 deg morning.

I will change it if it goes off next week, however i have my fingers crossed it works for another 8 weeks until the frost disappears in a morning

£165 for a new battery where you buying them from main dealers? Surely there is a motor factors euro car parts, Andrew pages at trade price surely cant be that expensive.

I'd say with service like that you are better than the main stealers and will get some rewards from the billie spreading the good word what a decent chap you are on a chilly morning.. sh*t batteries seem to count for a lot nowadays.. dont get me "started" on low battery and stop starts...

We sell specialist stuff that sometimes sits around for months, batteries are a right pain.....sometimes when the battery is completely flat (like leaving lights on overnight) - the Ctek just won't start the charge cycle, if you hook up the flat battery to the booster pack and let it sit for about  20 minutes it transfers enough charge in the flat battery for the ctek to then do its thing.... always worth a try before buying a new one...

hi

this is spot on

i have a massive 30 year old starter charger that will start anything even 24 volt stuff and i did indeed have to give a totally flat battery a sniff on this before it would rejuvenate

i hate to think how many batteries ive given away that probably only needed a deep sulphate

I have a CTEK MXS 5.0 and it always starts the cycle, no matter how low the voltage. I've had it for years, I highly recommend it to anyone that doesn't have one yet.

One of the things I brought with me from the site was my huge Jag battery and sack barrow, old school BCA style, still can't be beaten for a unit or site.

I want one of those, thinking of getting a sack truck, a good over spec battery and some HD jump leads - like you say proper BCA style.  I sometimes could do with the Linde tug too
