Warranty advice

Hi guys. Just started a new used car dealership working from home. Will mainly be selling Jags in the price range £2500-00 - £20,000-00.  Would very much appreciate advice on the type of warranty I should be offering on the older lower price cars i.e X Types and S Types, and also the length of warranty.

hi

as you will know your way round these cars why not base your warranty on past experience

for example will you be having the sills welded up before you put fresh mots on the older stuff or getting failure sheets and working off them?

Thanks for your comments Dave. I intend to be very selective on cars I buy. Not really concerned about body, more concerned about mechanical issues within six months of the sale sale. All cars will have a fresh mot and pdi however no matter how diligent you are problem/s can arise.

Hi Markuz.

Loads on here about the CRA2015 etc  

The ladies and gents on here like an introduction from newbies if possible and you’re not too shy ;o) so maybe tell us a bit about your background and proposed set up.

You may consider not giving a warranty at all, but spend some time familiarising yourself with the CRA. 

Good call Jags maybe, but not at £2000 for me. Jag people are odd at that price and your recon could be painful. If they come in PX you can bid accordingly.

Hi Noacross, Thanks for your reply. Brief intro, spent many years in Financial services as an IFA followed by stint providing sub prime finance to car dealers throughout North Wales and the North West. Built up a successful area when the company went into administration. Then worked selling cars for a large Independent dealer. Cars ranged from a few grand to £40,000 plus. Reasons for selecting Jags?  Where I live is saturated with small used car dealers. The ones selling exec stock concentrate on the usual German stock. Don't see a huge amount of Jags. I love Jags and would like to specialise in them. Aim to sell five or six quality cars a month from home. Careful stock selection and will travel anywhere in the country for the right stock at the right price. I may be well off beam but it feels right.

Do a few cheaper Jags myself and do well off them. They are very hard to come by in decent nick and you need to know what to look for. Good Jags are hard to find. 

The buyers are either complete pretentious arseholes or lovely people. No in between.

Wouldn’t be my cup of tea 24/7.

Hi Mojo,  which models do you find go well. I'm aiming at X Type, S Type, XF and XK8 to start with.

I would be very careful using words like “ “dealership”, it’s misleading.....

It's not necessarily which model, it's more the whole package. The buyers are very fussy. Is the leather the right colour? Some cars sell better with cream than black, even though I think black looks better. If it's a sovereign does it have piping on the seats? So is it a proper sovereign? Do you know what else a Sovereign should have? Not to mention knowing where to look for rot, listening out for knackered injectors and flywheels on the diesels and where the big petrols like to piss out oil. Service History is a big thing too... 

As for XF's the 2.7d has a variety of issues, stemming back to the S Type and the 3.0D is mainly DPF issues which blow up the engine if left too long.

The definition appears to have changed.James EPV for instance very cleverly got himself nominated for a dealership award and I think he was operating from home.Maybe we should refer to ourselves as a ‘brand’ and there are those on here of course with an in house R & D facility.

Thanks for all your comments guys. Much appreciate yours Mojo.  Haven't given too much thought to the whole package thing. Mantra is must have leather and comprehensive if not full service history. Preferably Jag main dealer or specialist. Dealership I worked at were very hard ball on selling the stock on forecourt as opposed to what clients would like. Not too bad inspecting cars. Dealership was also pretty lethal inspecting trade ins and giving very little for them. Have access to a couple of body shops who do excellent work for little money. Local Jag specialist for mechanical repairs etc at reasonable rates. Regarding Jag buyers being choosy, have you found that's  the case for buyers of low money sub £5k stock as well as buyers parting with decent money?

We do some cheap S & X types so long as they're not rotted out. On a clean 'proper' car I find they either take a glance and throw their money at you and never hear from them until it's time to change or they visit three times, notepad, underneath checking on something ticketed a day previously and moan and winge about a crease in a seat bolster...don't mind a cheap S Type myself, always seem a lot of car for the money.

Hi Grant. When you say cheap what price bracket are you talking about. Reason I ask I've never sold exec stock before under the £5k mark. How low will people go price wise for an x or s?
