Me neither,now fitted to fiat and Chrysler2018 onwards in the USA and some in the UK means you can't communicate with the car via eobd or your machine might go into meltdown,

As the internet is famous for seems like a load of misinformation is already out there i jumped onto Snap on usa and one comment popped up which makes sense. 

My understanding is that the protocol was more to prevent the unauthorized access of changing of data.

You should still be able to read diagnostic data that's available. Otherwise they would not be able to smog or certify cars sold in the US.

My understanding is FIAT group have now locked their diagnostic protocol to approved only tools. They had a spate of high profile vehicle thefts with the cars being laptop hacked across USA. Diagnostics must now be authorized by FIAT and the gateway will not allow connection to the vehicles unless it's approved by FIAT over a secure network. OBD functionality is still there but must be approved bu the manufacturer (£££). I believe you can bypass these modules to gain comms but that would invalidate your warranty but it's all a bit new at the moment as 2018> vehicles.

....an example, people abusing safety sytems such as TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems) by altering the trip settings to silly values like plus or minus 60psi, and/or 'telling the ECU's the TPMS isn't there at all, seen this a lot on early Reggies and Pugs. Spend any time on an owners forum and it will show plenty of DIY owners whom seem to think this is an OK thing to do, rather than fix the original fault.

I said it a while back, the right to repair will become a thing of the past, and if like me you are in Garage Business you will have to lease the correct machines from the Mfr, and pay their annual Subscriptions.

That is why I see this as a 5 to 10 year business, by or before 2030 I will be just playing with a few Track Cars etc, or more likely doing bugger all in a warm sunny climate well away from the UK

as i understand block exemption is being updated in brussels at the mo which is why manufacturers are rushing through this blocking device, i understand its to do with vehicle security and driving cars remotely but as said its the thin edge of the line if they get away with it

these cars are 1 year old already how will you feel when you buy one via internet get it delivered and cant comm with it

That was my thought too. Once it filters through into the market place that these vehicles need to got to a 'specialist repairer' ie FIAT approved/kitted for all out of warranty work, for its life. The resale value on these will be peanuts. That should make purchase new price drop overly excessive. It's whether all manufacturers follow suit, practically locking the aftermarket repairs to themselves. I suppose in a way this is what Tesla are doing now...

I agree with you both, they are not going to allow the likes of us Indies access to these "new" systems.

That is why these newest Semi Autonomous like 2017 E Class etc are depreciating as much as they do now.

I doubt I'd make a profit on our own one now, and I got a really good deal on that as an ex demo last year.

Most of my Customers are already aware of this, and hanging on to their 11 - 12 plate Cars now, spending money on proper Waxoyling etc etc and keeping them right up to scratch.

Changing the subject slightly, to tree hugging emissions etc one Customer of mine has already said he will not buy a new Diesel RR because the one he has will probably banned from Inverness in the next few years, Glasgow has now outlawed them, so it won't be too long before Inverness does the same, along with other UK Cities.

Tesla  Johnny Cab / UBER  That's what we got to look forward to in a few years
