  1. We source cars quite often, its a £500 deposit upfront, and as long as the car is as described mileage spec and condition when it arrives, they pay the balance on collection.

we had one customer try to cancel without even viewing the car when it arrived. said she has bought elsewhere during the process, ok no problem we will keep the car for stock and we will keep your £500 deposit for the costs we have incurred.

never heard back from her again.

  2. my current favourite one was from yesterday,

couple in their 60s looking  at a 1.6 Suzuki 2wd vitara..... well I just need to go and check the insurance to see if that's not going to be expensive before I buy.

Reply to them,  Oh come on behave, the insurance isn't a factor here lets be honest....  what is really stopping you... answer well to be honest we are not at the stage of buying yet just wanted to look around.

    Twats.

Did get 'rusty bullet holes ' into a conversation with an old dear customer many years ago with the excuse it was 'trade talk' for stone chips on the part ex.

Vintage banter lol, must admit we played that game a lot also how stupid can you make the mystery shopper feel.

think my record for that was doing the 5 point presentation I said I want to show you this... and proceeded to walk him around the car 5 times without saying a word and then said right jump in lets go for a drive.

  4. Usual one we used to do was get a certain phrase or unusual made up words into the conversation when the customer was clearly not dealing or was messing about

Had to stop once when a customer pulled up one of the salesman when he was dared to keep telling the customer about the new dufenspangloid system on the Citroen DS5, customer rumbled him immediately and wrote a letter to Citroen saying how we were taking the piss out of him.

    No, He was in Yorkshire!

I've had a conversation, He is basically moaning that he has spent £23000 on a car and the tyres are "only" 5 and 6mm, Wanted to go 50/50 on replacing all 4 but I said no.

Put him straight on the 14 days thing as well and he sounded shocked, I'm so glad that he ended up coming to us to collect and that we are not into distance selling regs.

My only worry now is that he'll post some shitty review online about how we conned him.

All you reply with is mr customer, no one forced you to travel to see us and no one forced you to sign the paperwork.

these people have a tantrum they should be treated like children.

  6. Tell him he has 14 days to cancel the finance but he has to pay them for the car still.

and then say you have done everything to the car as promised and have the proof, I cant see what else you should or have to do.

he has signed all the paperwork and was happy when he left site if he wasn't he wouldn't have taken delivery of the car. end of

Great analogy to be fair (and ironically, my old man owned clothes shops before he retired and he used to moan about that very thing).

Back to our trade: In my eyes though, the risk is my insurance, the vehicle, the possible re-clean, fuel but most of all my precious time and how do people even have the brass neck to walk off - surely unless it drives like a dog during the test drive what is going on?  This is the reason I don't sell cars that attract boy racers and test pilots - thought I'd have this nonsense covered.

I am considering changing my tack, what do you think, reasonable?

Customer:  Can I have a test drive?

Me: Yes sir, I welcome test drives and/or any other inspection but only after we have agreed a sale (subject to car performing as expected)

We usually just grab the trade plates and go for a drive, but recently so many messers recently we are asking a lot of questions.

A perfect example this morning, opening up a fella is all over a ford ranger we have he says can I take it out I love it.

yes no problem come inside just need to grab some details from you, name address usual. then I ask him his budget. this is way over what he has, he is not vat reg either so he didn't understand he has to pay the vat on top plus, after explaining there is no discount on this car and you've already told me you cant spend that amount nor can you pay the vat.

he still insists he wants to take it out. I just flat out asked him what would be the point ? you wont be buying you've told me........ his answer well I might buy one elsewhere but I need to know how they drive !!!!

usually would have driven this guy no questions asked but now no chance.

Dan, you need to qualify the customer and get a commitment prior to appointing them, they need to know your time isnt to be wasted (politely) and you only appoint genuine buyers, equally they need to know that you guarantee you will not be wasting their very precious time. If they start making excuses, “I have 27 other vehicles I need to see before I ask my dad for a loan.....

My method is upfront and fare and ensures neither parties time isn’t wasted.

    Hi

1 was an appointment and we asked him to bring his car., the others just showed up,

  9. This last week has been quite frustrating with customers coming in and making an effort to visit us from quite far distances and not bring their part ex with them.

we have had a few examples recently where we gave a rough price subject to seeing theirs only for it to show up and its a utter mess. I know buyers are liars some of these seem to be genuine mistakes from customers but to not bring your car its starting to get silly.

4 customers in this weekend so far, all travelled from at least 20 mins away and oh we didn't bring our px but it all depends what we get for it... we are refusing to look at any part ex price unless its on site.

We even just flat out asked the last gentleman why haven't you brought it if its so important to the deal ? you wouldn't buy my car without viewing it and we wouldn't buy or value yours.  his response well if you going to be like that I will take my business elsewhere. yes sir please do !

Likewise, I find most people pleasant enough. You do come across some truly horrible people but thankfully they are in the minority. The one thing that bugs me the most about people is how unrealistic they are when looking at an older car. Simply not prepared to accept normal wear and tear, champagne taste and all that

Yes and when you are honest about it they get upset lol, we had an 08 plate xsara Picasso lovely low miles and service history, customer looking round it with a microscope.... its had paintwork that deffo its a dodgy buy if I go for it.... mr customer I would be amazed if it hadn't had paintwork majority of used cars will do at some stage of their life.. would you prefer to have bought it with the damage on the vehicle....

he shuffled off mumbling about bloody con men.

  11. I Would say the majority of customers I deal with tend to be quite pleasant, but one thing I have noticed recently is how stupid they are becoming or how they don't actually pay attention to adverts or the car they are looking at.

So many calls recently saying I have seen your car on your website is it a diesel ? whats the mileage ? and various questions which are all in the advert.

perfect example, customer rings up today nice and polite ,seen your advert is it a diesel.......no mr customer its a petrol as stated in the advert oh well that's a no for me then thanks ! and puts phone down

Well there you go didn’t expect this my faith in humanity has been restored for today, Kids farther just rang to say they will not be bringing the car back as he has clearly hit a speed bump or curb both alloys are already damaged bearing in mind he picked it up in a mint condition less than a few days ago, and asked if I knew anyone who could repair burn holes in a seat.

I had to pry turns out the kids farther doesn’t live with the mum and son, he went around there to see what all the fuss was about when he got there mum and son where arguing over insurance the kids insurance company has already black flagged him for dangerous driving hard braking corners ect the box was only fitted yesterday so farther stepped in and took car of his son.

Good luck fitting that bumper back on i thought there a right pain in the backside when they pop out god only knows what carnage they will be when there tore off.

Good on the dad glad to see some values, as for the mum and son utter arseholes vermin.

What is with these people who hide behind email making demands... The reason they are emailing is because they don't actually want to speak to you and form a verbal relationship. They are just phishing. I take all email inquiries very seriously, but my reply is always "please call me personally to discuss and I will do my very best to help you".

Genuine interested parties call, its as simple as that IMO...

I just don't like the fact they are brave on email, they would never say to our face. I want that car cleaning now !!

  14. We had a very impatient customer earlier, on a Toyota aygo that's just arrived recently, on web without image saying awaiting valet as it was filthy.

He rings up demanding pics, so I oblige telling him the car is filthy but will receive full a valet when sold or when prepped in a week or so. a real snotty email comes back I will be down in 2 hours it will !! be valeted for me to look at or I wont be coming.

Sent him a reply don't bother coming then as I have other cars being cleaned that are sold and are scheduled to go out.

Genius haha, few examples of customer taking the actual gear stick knob, Always seem to be on Citroen C1 where they just twist and come off. even caught a customer doing this and said why have you done that, answer well you must have lots of replacements you wont miss it, she wasn't even buying another c1 what was she going to do with it I wonder.

Hahaha fantastic. Is that one of the ones French drink drivers can use when their license is revoked or is it too powerful?

yes, we have an old boy who is always up and down our road in it looking at stock.

Eventually got talking to him and he has bought a car so we kicked him quite hard in the gonads for it.... even rang the only aimax dealer in the uk I believe and they basically told us nope we don't want it haha.

February has left me cold and miserable so cheer me up with your strangest part ex's

    We're taking in a ' Mitsubishi i ' this week.

Now I had never heard of one before but it's a 2008 650cc petrol automatic version of one of those Peugeot/Mitsi electric things on a 56 plate.

Aixam crossline, its utter filth of the highest order... or is that the lowest order not sure.

Ha. Yes I guess so.  Luckily the three miles I'm going home testing a car I'm taking it to the auto electrician's for an A/C re-gas in the morning, or showing it to a customer or it's just had an EML on that now needs drivin... the list is endless. ;0)

I have the trusty old CRV at home to actually use at other times.

Last time I left a late ML on the forecourt a month, it cost me £850 at Mercedes to get working again. German crap...

...anyway- is anybody selling anything today or is it just me having too much time on my hands?

Yeah - we've mentioned this before . Displayed vertically is hilarious.  Idiots. I have a multi fit kit to the trade plates so can often clip on below the numberplates, but I must admit- I tend to just stick them to the front and back windows with suckers.

We're very rural and I can't remember the last time I even saw a police car.  Just the odd 'Speed Awareness Course filler' vans occasionally.

Quiet day here also, no customers so just been dicking about on autotrader and dealer auction, I guess it comes down to a jobsworth police officer and if he has nothing to do and wants to annoy us sales people.
