All it’s failed on are a couple of bits of welding. The rest are advisories so all you are really complaining about are the failures & I’m afraid holes in end-of-life cars can, and do, appear in the space of 4 to 5 months.

This we know. However, point DCS01 made was that the test in January was 100 percent clean sheet no advisories.

There is no way this car should have passed in Jan, How many other cars are they putting through and endangering people?

Had this car come in to us I would not hesitate to report.

All credit to those that repay it in my opinion, wonder though how many redundancies will happen after furlough ends in September, think that's where some of the larger boys will save money realising they don't need quite as many expensive staff in their gin palaces

Absolutely right. Sadly when furlough ends for many people that may be the case. We as businesses may also find that the recovery in the short to medium term may be more challenging than the pandemic.

  4. Mr Chesterman is without doubt a very clever guy who will personally trouser a fortune from the venture, what a salesman. As far as I understand (might be wrong I often am) his modus operandum is to build a business and move it on, which I think will be the case here. Blockbuster and the housing market were ripe for online disruption however, used cars are a different ball game altogether, particularly in the UK.

Personally i still think the majority of used car buyers will want to see , touch , feel and sit in , before making a choice ,

We know every used car is a completely different beast isn't it . New cars may well go online as they are as near the same as can be .

    Used cars are not .

I hear every one talking about selling online but in reality we are all like yourself buying online because we have no choice , but selling online to Joe Blogs is a different entity altogether , we've had a few but its not entirely a remote sale as they ring , make appointment and arrive , even those few who have paid upfront over lockdown have gone over the car as they do before leaving as I must admit I would do the same .

I have talked to customers about buying online and have not met one who would dare spend any sort of money without seeing it onsite , none wished to wait for it to arrive by lorry and thatys the stumble block in my opinion for used cars , they have no idea whats arriving , even the 14 day money back offer is the min legal distance sale they have to offer anyway so just made to look good

They are not car dealers  as he said and are without doubt bean counters  for as long as it works .

cant knock them for trying though ,

Same. Cars are rather different to tins of beans or t-shirts online has a while to go yet with used cars. Many of us guy's the supermarkets and the franchises are in the same online space with similar offerings and established physical sites with good reputations.

had an old lady in about a month back now , selling a 4x4 Octavia 12 k car so nice motor , we fully serviced it , new mot .It was spotless

This old girl wanted a 4x4 estate so she felt good in winter driving to see her daughter .

Went to look at one nearer to where she lives , fair comment i thought , It was dirty , mouldy , green mould in windows , filthy carpets , , She asked if he was going to clean it .

he told her to wind her neck in:o , I sell cars not a valeter, regards service lady get it done when you've bought it   lol .

    he lost the sale obliviously.

    She bought ours

And the lesson is do the job properly and thee will prosper.

  7. Always a buzz when a cheapie provides a decent return, I wonder is it that metal prices are rising or is the uplift in scrap due to parts shortages? Whichever way happy days. went off subject with my memories of t-cut and tyre paint in earlier post, so back to main dealers retailing older motors don't think they understand the customer and expectation that buyers of older cars have. Little or no knowledge of the common faults on their non franchise p/x's setting themselves up for a fall in my opinion.

  8. The online sellers will probably bend over backwards at this stage to build reputation and retention those good online review's which are for anyone selling used cars in today's world essential. Perhaps they build in breakdown cover, not sure but we will be looking into their offerings closely going forward in order to react as far as we can. If there is an occasion whereby a customer local to us has an issue and the car purchased from cazawhatever under the supplier warranty is brought to us, we shall have a special labour rate to quote and it will not be cheap!

  9. Oh for the days when motors were painted in cellulose sorted many a bloomed minor or zephyr, spend a day with compound. t cut, wax and wire wool for the chrome, tyre paint and wash the engine down with petrol off all things (HSE would have field day now). Clean the points up, clean out the out the filters. Mint ball on the forecourt and a decent profit. These days most older p/ex we only allow scrap value.

Nearly gone as we opened up Rory  after lock down click collect , like shelling peas , 80% of them never got online after the 12th they just walked out .  Good money too , average of 500 notes  extra on each one and some more when i could over the profit margin we planned for   :D.They just kept going up and up .  Wish id bought 100 but we didn't have any more room .

But I am the ultimate risk taker , i have zero fear of buying , born from an early age in the wholesale fruit markets and produce auctions ,

Like now everyone who waits for the crash is losing money , I'm buying cars at what i sold them at 6 months ago but you know that too , Still selling .

Tell you what though the public are now realising that prices are fixed and cars are short in supply .

Sellers mkt and about time again

Same raided Motab site first lockdown before they closed the site we bought some stupidly cheap stock, needless to all gone with great margins. Hats off to you David  in the current trade market, fortune favours the brave as they say. No doubt you have a number of Cazoo transporters on the way with fully prepped stock ready for you to retail.

I am the same, sat looking at a list of cars making on average £1000 over book, no matter what it is.  We are being told this is going to continue for a while yet, but personally i'm sceptical if customer demand will remain quite so strong.  I know there's the global processor problem affecting new car production, but I just cant bring myself to fill my forecourt with stock owing me retail.  Looking back on last year, we had the hyper "bounce back loan" prices for a short period and then the market cooled off. Hoping this is the same pattern this time.

We all know CAP is adrift on the money at the moment however current trade prices mental! Stock on our pitch in some cases a grand or more over retail for last September book,  yet seeing motors making same money to trade. Time for caution as far as we are concerned not being negative but as you say how long will the current demand last? The good lady's motor has done less than 500 miles since covid she is one of many who will not be in the market to change this year.

Unfortunately its a fact that the UK economy and UK business has been hit much harder than nearly any other comparable developed country. We also suffered a higher death rate. One thing that staggers me is that £37 *billion* was given to Serco to run a 'Test and Trace' system. Basically a computer system and some call centres - that didn't work. That's absolutely insane! BILLIONS must have been siphoned off.

I am also very very nervous about the current direction of the economy. A hugely overstimulated property market and Rishi still pumping money into the economy. It feels like a bubble. Yes, some money has been chucked at us car dealers (and others) but at what future cost?

I am more concerned about one of my customers rather than the economy who contracted  covid in February 2020 and is still walking with aid of a stick, plus we have two retired members of staff who have spent many weeks in hospital due to the contagion. Our death rate cannot be attributed solely to the government in the early days it was the scientists who advocated a herd immunity approach, also the lack of common sense within our community's exacerbated the spread , we as individuals all have a responsibility which so many sadly ignore (been in a supermarket latley).  Economy wise it's pretty cyclical around every ten years we have a downturn, we were heading there anyway just so sad for many families that this virus was the catalyst. Don't be nervous the economy it will recover. As for your point about our economy being hit harder than any other developed country I would love to see the numbers.

  13. No real surprise here as many dealer groups have already started to consolidate their representation. Twitchy bottom time for many who hold one or more of Stellantis franchises, back to the future as in the 80's there was an appetite for manufacturers to have independents appointed as service points across the country which over time dissipated as the market was over represented. Times have changed and can see this policy being revisited going forward. Can see many planning applications from Stellantis dealers being submitted, block of flats coming to a location near you.

  14. Understandable Martin whilst Carzoo and Carzam seem to have a price war going on. Also dealers such as Evans Halshaw have retail priced cars that look value compared to current wholesale prices.

  15. Across various platforms today as we all are most days, cannot believe the money some of the stock is making really stellar money today!  I do enjoy the odd sherbet and had to check this morning had I had one too many last night? Suitably checked and found it was not a sherbet haze but the reality of the current wholesale market.

  16. Get the odd cynical individual who's view is that I am a car salesman therefore dodgy by default this type always have the view that we are liars, rather not deal with this type of customer as they usually turn out to be a pain in the backside. Thankfully we find we can reason with most customers and we deal at screen price, no discount. if and when the job falls out of bed only then would we consider discounting. With the wholesale market as it is right now if you can afford to do it let the morons walk and wait for the sensible customer.
