  1. Dean, don't be put off, just do it and don't ask the council. Most of us have sold from the door,it is not illegal.A safer option you might consider for starting up is selling older mega mileage Passat diesels for under £2k.In my experience, when we have taken them in,you never get stuck with them. They are plentiful and don't cost much and the punters who buy them know what they are doing and don't mess you about.

Another impressive feature on them today, can't help but be impressed by what they have achieved so far. However, that in itself is not worthy of a new thread, but what is however is that of the 140 odd cars they have in stock, less than 10% are on AT. Food for thought as lunchtime approaches.

Hi Sparky,I agree they are impressive, but we have seen it all before.Their numbers appear to say they did little for 5/6 years, then managed to load up with debt ( £2.3m last year ).........so best of luck to them.......they might need it !

a  VERY large company called autoquake went into administration 6 years ago.

It was rumoured that another VERY large company would take them over due to there very large internet presence, they didnt.

they bought instead into "carsite", another large company that had a big internet presence, this "company" that bought into them had pre-existing customers on there books who they had sold finance to, insurance to, and had millions of customers who had a discount card with them .

    it lasted a year

    the company? tesco.

the reason all 3 failed ?

    they couldnt get  stock.

number one job is having the right stock.

just buy my book " four wheels to a fortune " available all good bookshops

We never found out how much Tesco blew,I did ask them at the time.I think I will try again !

  4. Hi Dean........Welcome to the Jungle !!!........Keep posting on here, you will get better advice than asking traders at your local auction.Noting your love of cars, mechanical knowledge etc.I would say go for high spec old stuff,Merc/BMW/Audi Coupes etc needing some work but with good history. You have to be prepared to travel long distances to find them.It is hard trading from home, but I know people who have also  been successful selling older Volvo estates and Audi Avants etc.from their home.Best of Luck

  5. High Mr MG. - The seller is a dickhead,he thought he was being clever. You certainly can't advertise a lovely car etc, then sell it for spares or repair only (even if it was for £100).Firstly,ask the dealer for an explanation, then request a full refund, plus your expenses and tell them to collect it.

Rory, one of the ones I had yesterday was an 2015 A5 but had a 13 plate Cooper to chop. Was a bit scruffy I won't lie, probably about £500 prep but ridiculously low mileage at 14k. White, all mod cons and auto. WBAC offered her 6k and Audi offered 6300! All it took was me top that by 250 and a smile and it was a done deal.

Used to hate taking in part exchanges before, but since we've opened our bodyshop and mechanic off site I've become a lot more confident. Have told the sales guys to still price the same way but not to let it be a deal killer. Improved our margin by a fair whack

You don't like swappers !,we don't like straight deals unless they are on prime Chucky with commission ! We try and wait for the right swappers !

Not sure what you mean about the way I buy? I sadly dont have a car buying crystal ball, however I try to avoid the shite as we all do. Ok im at the subprime end of the market but I can still be fussy when buying.

This is the car in question.

    20170320_152734_zpskm9kiqw3.jpg

Very late 2007 51k miles fsh 10 Months mot when sold. Nice spec, full leather etc. £2100 it when for. I actually bought it off a girl i know who was offered a very low px price at Evans Halshaw.

Im taking a hard stand with this. Not because im a dodge pot trying to shirk out of my responsibilities. But for the fact that the fault was not there at the time the car was sold.

Its way to easy to crumble straight away and fix things that legally I don't have to just for the easy life, Im guilty of that. But who's to say in another 6 weeks he's not back on the phone with another unreasonable request. Some see kindness as weakness.

We now live in a compensation culture. There is an element of society that will seek a way to get money or get someone else too pay for something.

Hi Mr C,I agree looks like nice straight car.But if you are into subprime chucky, maybe that is the problem-nightmare punters.I would say, unwind the deal, advertised properly it will do £2500 to a proper punter who is looking for one and not just a subprimer who just looks at the weekly cost.

I'm not going to have any of this, how can I realistically be liable for this. I have had a record year of repairing other people cars and I'm getting tired of it. If I have a car that needs work before it goes out then it gets done, everything is sold in good faith. As a rule I spend a couple of days using them myself.

What do I do from now on, replace any wear and tear item on a car just in case it goes! We are talking about 10 year old motors FFS.

People just don't seem to want to take responsibility for their own cars.

Mr C,you appear to be having a bad year with merchandise problems.Without being diplomatic, may I suggest it could be down to the buying or your business model and not the punters. You must know that this job consists of lousy margins, long hours and plenty of aggravation/stress ,it always has done.Get this car in,sort it out, things will get better.Good luck.

    Chokes on tea!

Cheaper stock easier to buy?....who do you work for BCA:)

Ha Ha ! Guys, better start again.I mean cheap good stock. If you do your research properly, you have to target a lot of stock, then constantly watch that screen and don't get distracted ( our guy can be watching 3 sales at once),there are always cheap cars slipping through. It is much better than going on 400 mile round trips don't you think !

Personally I'd get the car back , check out what the issue is and HELP the customer after all does it matter if its 28 days - 32 days , its not a long time since they trusted you? Even if it costs you a CAT Just think of the goodwill and future business ... but that's just how I would deal with it Mr C.

I say to all my customers even after the warranty has run out should something go wrong obviously it won't be covered however please let me know and if I can help in any way I'll do it , it doesn't have to be financially, can be advise / recommendation etc and that again builds customers and recommendations.

    Spot on !

Hunting stock is the killer for me, selling really is a piece of piss if you have the stock at decent money.

Would be nice if there was a used car cash n carry you could just pop to once a month and buy 20 units!

It has never been easier to buy cheap stock from the block. You just have to do a lot of homework. What about being on the road at 4,to get to Colchester for 8.30 to wait for the catelogue, then go round the yard ..................it sounds like the Hovis advert ! ..........and a lot of the auctions were bent, which made it harder!

Despite what anyone says, you cannot run a pitch properly on your own. However, what you have got to do.........only work half days...but every day..........that way the other 12 hours are yours !

  12. Hi Matt,...Land Rovers etc, sounds promising to me.There is a guy near us just does Range Rover boxes and employs several people.Have you checked out the MOD agents who flog off Land Rovers and unused parts for them.I see you have a lease, you need to check out commercial property regs with regard to 'delapidations in leases' and what could happen when you decide to leave. We were hit with a mega bill just for moving on after our landlords, the local council had outsourced management of our premises to a professional commercial landlord......Good Luck!

As outlined in the Queen’s Speech, the main elements of the Bill are:

    •       Repealing the Victorian-era Bills of Sale Acts and replacing them with a Goods Mortgage Act which enables individuals to use their existing goods (such as a vehicle) as security for a loan, while retaining possession of the goods.

    •       Increasing protection for borrowers who get into financial difficulty.

    •       Helping borrowers in financial difficulty by giving them the right to voluntary termination by handing over their vehicle or other goods to the lender.

    •       Providing protection for innocent third parties who buy a vehicle subject to a logbook loan that may be at risk of repossession.

“Logbook loans represent an issue for our industry as they do not have to be recorded on the vehicle data registers, meaning that vehicles can be easily sold without the clear title.

Good Post ! .......Our local BCA had the bright idea of starting a Log Book Loans section.Bought an X Trail in the first sale ( doc to follow) of course the doc did not follow.Went through the usual BCA " fob off procedure" and eventually got a full refund. The section was soon closed down.

  14. Back in the day ,we operated on a main thoroughfare competing with 12 other ( each approx 30 car ) open pitches side by side. The pitch rules were the same for all of us.Stock had to washed, leathered off and 'on sale' every day by 10 am.After that, half your stock would be polished daily with Autoglym (it was cheaper then) ,worked in damp weather and made water run off and not leave any marks.Stock always looks best displayed outside don't you think !

Kinross are fine bought loads out of there and one of the most helpful and decent auction centres in the UK in my experience. A lot of time for the good staff there.

Yes totally agree, lovely people (mind this was a good while ago ),only ever went twice, after that just used to leave bids with (from memory Joyce) although never met her.I would ring the next day to see how we got on,she often would say,yes you bought a few, they will be with you shortly. We sometimes got them before we paid. !

  16. Hi there, your prep so far and expectations appear very good. Most of us have sold from home at some stage.I would say even though you will be part time, get a website ( inc. your photo, embellished CV,plenty of bulls....t),I like to get ideas from US websites-they have great wording.Warranties- you are right, these companies let you down, they can upset customers and  be expensive.Do your own,we have fo 21years - it works. You will need plenty of advice, just keep posting on here. Good Luck !

Why would a low margin cause you a problem?

Surely you are free to decide what you want your margin to be, so long as you have physically made a profit on a car and aren't selling at a loss, I struggle to see why this could cause any problem?

If you are a retailer and the vehicle is in and out of stock for little or no  profit it can set alarm bells ringing.Old stock is OK.This is what happened to us.We had sold a car on behalf of a regular customer whose circumstances had changed. The gross profit from memory was about £150.The Vat inspector was suspicious that undeclared cash may also have been paid! We just let the inspector  assess us on top of some other things, they have to get something extra!                                                                                    Another one I recall,we had bought, paid for and had delivered some stock from Manheim, one of them was not ours.So we were refunded and the stock book showed that the purchase and sales price were the same. The Vat inspector again was suspicious, made enquiries and this time eventually accepted our explanation. These are just small things, wait until you are chosen for a HMRC  random enquiry!

    Dear ...

Unfortunately the warranty ran out on the 00/00/0000, as we prepare our vehicles to the highest standard, we can assure you that this fault was not present at the time of selling, it passed its multi point inspection (please see the pre delivery report) and also passed it's mot, with no advisories.  Vehicles are inherently a high risk item to buy due solely to the many many components it is made from, all of which will have a degree of wear and tear after 8 years of service.  In this instance we do not feel this to be a faulty part which can go back some 5 months as no complaint has been received which would point out this fault at the time of sale. It therefore does not form part of any warranty claim or any claim under your statutory rights through CRA 2015 as this is clearly a wear and tear issue.

The vehicle is ready for collection upon full settlement of the invoice attached.  Please note we have provided the recovery free of charge and to minimise the time you are without your vehicle attended within 2 hours of the initial call.

We trust this now concludes the matter and look forward to seeing you back on the road.

Love, hugs and best wishes, your local friendly garage mwah

Great wording.........except I am unsure that if it got to a small claims court,it could be construed that all  your vehicles represent a 'high risk'.  Otherwise, maybe we should copy most of that !
