andymc1973 199 Posted October 20, 2019 Guys I’ve a 2010 cls and the steering at low speeds goes heavy then light, I’ve had the rack replaced but it’s no better, would the Star diagnostics pull up a fault that snap on wouldn’t? Power steering fluid is full, the only other thing is the car had after market wishbone arms on, ive out the OEM ones back on as we couldn’t match the after market ones up Could the wishbones be causing it? Nick M.K. 574 Posted October 20, 2019 More likely it has a Servotronic (speed sensitive power steering) which is malfunctioning. Star might show a code.
andymc1973 199 Posted October 20, 2019 is that the pump Nik?

I agree. 6 minutes ago, andymc1973 said: is that the pump Nik? I imagine a dodgy sensor. Sporadically thinks the car is doing more than x mph and stiffens the steering, well reduces the power assistance.
andymc1973 199 Posted October 20, 2019 so I will need a star reading to confirm
Mark101 536 Posted October 20, 2019 That I can’t say for sure Andy just that Nick’s diagnosis sounds plausible. I would find a good independent Merc specialist if your reader doesn’t register a fault.
EPV 631 Posted October 20, 2019 My understanding is that Star is one of the best manufacturer specific diag machines around. In the right hands, it’s very powerful.
Rory RSC 596 Posted October 20, 2019 Mercedes are very hard to code read without star Andy. Find someone with it, or a knock off version,
Nick M.K. 574 Posted October 20, 2019 (edited) On a Merc it could even be a faulty speed sensor which gives wrong speed to the Servotronic which in turn stiffens the steering. Star has built-in tests which test sensor output values and can help diagnose it even without fault codes. Edited October 20, 2019 by Nick M.K.
