S60 D5 Head Unit repair

Recommended Posts

Evening all, have taken an 06 S60 D5 auto in, too nice not to retail but the head unit is faulty, ebay ones are £240! but not coded to the car so you lose steering wheel controls etc.. The fault seems a common fault from the forums but I can only find one place that repairs them, at a price £220.. Anyone had any dealings with these in the past? It's the HU-850 model number, all seems a bit steep to spend on an 06 S60 but I have to get it done so looking for a cheaper fix or let my hard earned dwindle away on a poxy old fecking stereo.

I assume you have taken £250 off the price of their part ex so just get it fixed or, put a new radio in.

It’s a 12 year old car so the multifunction steering wheel not working isn’t a problem imo but having no radio is a problem.

£220 to fix a faulty head unit is cheaper than i’d expect, I paid a chap £280 to fix a head unit on a 2009 e320 a few months back.

Fit a stereo with handsfree bluetooth (media and phone) - that way you're saving money on OEM and adding value.

Used this outfit for some XC60 bits a short time ago, most helpful... they are selling a replacement for £140 + vat, any good?

https://www.volvobreakers.co.uk/volvo-interior-parts/volvo-cd-player-radio/?page_number=2

Maybe call and get some advice, they pointed me in the right direction after a chat. Not sure how an non OEM would fit in the dash panel or suit "Volvo" owners... just my opinion, there are also some wiring interfaces made to get the steering controls working on more modern / upgraded units.. all down to cost and would invest in it unless youre smoking it for a good while..

My last S60 came with a decent spec Pioneer in the dash with the right surround but it just didn’t look like it was meant to be there; the previous keeper had obviously wanted Bluetooth and USB etc. They’d left the original unit in the boot though which went back in when the car got sold.

Thanks for the replies all, yep I knew the stereo was dodgy but didnt allow as much as it is to rectify, as for using a Halfords unit unfortunately this is the double stack model with built in cup holder so would have to bastardise some plastic to make it fit which would look shit,,plus I like my cars to be completely original especially Volvo stock which I'm leaning towards specialising in, I've had more and more recently and the billys have all been a nice bunch plus rarely any come backs.

Cheers Area51 I'll give your man a shout see if he can save me some beer tokens before I send it off.

Paddy, if you get something to replace it from the breakers, flog the tut coming out in ebay; some weird types on there who maybe after the parts you have to sell.... you never know, could be worth twenty/thirty quid to someone.. every little helps - now get it bought.

I’ve got exactly the same issue, an HU-850 not playing any sound (apart from the occasional ‘pop’ or ‘crackle’ - I think they were made by Kellogg’s). Funnily enough mine’s also an 06 but it’s not age related, it’s a common HU-850 failing.

My answer has been to do sweet f.a. & not refer to it on the adverts. I’ve got four figures wiped across the old knacker so if the punter wants a few quid off I’ll oblige. Tbh I find S60 punters ‘want a deal’ cos they’re nice but a little bit greedy - they’re usually only buying an S60 cos they won’t/can’t pay up for a V70.

Basically stuff them greedy eBay chancers.

It’s f***ed

I’ve seen theories on it’s “so-and-so” but as we’re dealing with 12 year old radios it’s a case of bin & replace. I opened mine up last week but there’s nothing obviously at fault so it’ll be a circuit board or component issue. Tbh electronic items aren’t made to be repaired (if your TV plays up you bin it & replace nowadays).

We've had a couple of XC70's with faulty HU-850 units. If the car has rear parking sensors they are wired through the HU-850 unit and wont operate if you replace with an after  market unit. Central Services 01206 396272 repair the units and have done a good job for me in the past.
