Scratch Repair

Recommended Posts

The paint has to be thin, a lot of the time touchup paint from halfords or other places needs to be thinned as the tip is ridiculously thin.

I've been on Detailing World for well over 10-15 years and some of the info is invaluable.

There is a thread about repairing scratches using the 'cut/shave technique'. It's superb. :-)

Here we go:

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=217520

Instead of watching midget porn, i switched to following the guys over on detailing world some of the work they do is just out of this world, we have learnt a massive amount from there and they often have good deals on offer as well so we always check there before ordering any cleaning kit.

There right up there for new products and they do good reviews so you dont get sucked into buying the latest fad.

I wasnt knocking them they where our go to system for donkies years, FCP is just so bloody dusty and if you want to polish the whole car it takes an age, where as these modern polishes can do it in one or two passes.

Yep the paint has to be fully set over night ideally to get the best results.

This OEM paint from Porsche is perfect for the L&C pen. I've just laid another coat about 30 mins ago so I'll do another in a minute and then leave it for the day to air dry.

It's difficult to know how much to leave for clear coat really but this scratch is deep given the poor car was keyed by some ****.

Can anybody recommend and good lacquer in a spray can for smart repairs?

Pro xl 2k lacquer, I've used with excellent results, obviously expect orange peel as low pressure, but nothing a cut and buff couldn't sort out.

1k paint dries, 2k hardens/cures, so heat gun wood be pointless for clearcoat you would need a short wave heat lamp which would cure paint in 15-20 minutes, or just leave it to harden over a few days depending on weather.

Also heard spraymax is quite good as well, but pricey.

Can you only use the Pro xl 2k laquer once?

I think so! Once the tin is opened I think it mixes the 2pack and off you go. Others may know more though.

You have up to 24 hours to use it once activated.

it would be dependant on weather

when i mix my own 2 pack lacquer i can get it to be buffable in 20 minutes with the heat gun,i have 2 different types of infra red panel heaters but they can easily cause problems with underlying paint :)

When using aerosols, there's a fair amount of buffing afterwards (low pressure/low volume).  Mix my own 2K and can get a nice gun finish, no mopping.

Thought the heat gun was only good for drying primer and sometimes base coat, was going to invest in a heat lamp. But will just try the heat gun now.

keep moving it and keep it away enough so you dont bubble the paint this way a localised repair on a bumper end is so easy

i blend down the lacquer to nearly pure thinners on the last coat so the buffing is minimal  but its rare you will not need to do some cutting in unless all panel lacquered

It's taken 4 layers of paint to fill the keyed area on the car.

I'm going to let it dry now for over a week as I'm away on holiday.

Once back though The Festool will be out to shave off the excess paint and then I'll compound and polish the area.

Final step: Apply clearcoat, shave and then polish. Fingers crossed it looks good!

what i did today on a black metallic car was get the correct  basecoat out i added some 2 pack lacquer and then mixed in a good bit of  hardener so the paint would start skinning in 15 minutes ,went round the car at least twice touching in every scratch and there were plenty, this way the complete paint will fall in and so no cutting required, this is a 08 citroen so it doesnthave to be perfect but it looks a million dola to a punter with 1300 nickr in his sky rocket

I have little imagination & even less enthusiasm for ancient unknown Asian Rockstars, or whatever they’re called.

Everyone else seems to think it’d be good news, if you’re all right then I’m wrong - I think it’d be an ornament.

£2000!!???!!! He’s ‘avin a giraffe! Apart from a few members of this forum over the last 24 hours, how many on planet earth do you think have actually typed ‘Asia Rocsta’ into their search bar?

Good God, virtually no-one wanted them decades ago, why now (unless there’s a thriving Asia Rocsta club)? I like a challenge but that’s a challenge too far.

If you go onto the festool website, they specifically say any tool sold outside of their website is a fake (from memory) I could be wrong.

I used the Festool yesterday and it does a very good job at shaving back paint.

The ione problem I had was that, somehow, it pulled some paint from the actually scratch. I ensured it was clinically many times before painting but using panel wipe too :-(

Should I have keyed the scratch also with say a fibreglass pen?

Thanks

It always did that for us when we had one, tried most things then gave it away.

Depending on what I'm repairing, I quite often just leave the paint touch in as it is, a couple of thin layers takes the eye off. If you're repairing deep scratches I'd be cleaning the scratch out with alcohol, fibreglass pen, couple of layers of primer, then paint.

Personally I either wetsand and compound to reduce the appearance of scratches or drop a few thin layers of paint in carefully and leave as is. Both techniques take the eye off. I do all of these things and not one person yet has said "hmm there's a scratch here"
