im a small dealer, rural based and my customer was doctor in local hospital, my bmw guy is based in donegal in southern ireland, he charged me €600 as he checked all wiring and all motors to ensure all areas covered, 3 days in total spent,€200 labour per day, hes an excellent bmw indy. my point is out of 30 warranties taken out with rac this year, only 3 claims have been made and all 3 were not enough to cover cost of repair. this is why ive asked for advice as to whether to do it myself

How much was your total spend on RAC warranties?

How much was your total claims amount?

Include headache and out of pocket additions from you, plus poor customer service.

Do the numbers.

How much have the warranties cost you? How much have you paid out in warranty claims? Should be pretty easy to work out whether running your own would be financially beneficial to you.

I mainly cover my own warranties and end up in pocket, but in all fairness to the warranty company what else can they do but go off autodata times, If you have done a dash out on a car the next one wont take as long but why should they pay for a garage learning a job? I built 3 sets of Ikea wardrobes.... 1st one took me 4 hours, 2nd one 2 hours and last was a piece of piss.... hence why some garages specialise in certain makes, you may pay more per hour but get job done in fraction of time.

Hi AB Motors,

So you spent 5k and got back 1k, if you'd put the 3k in a pot or on deposit you'd still have 1k .............. I think you know the answer.

Do your own warranties is my advice, I have never used a Warrranty Co, when we had the Gearbox firm we used to do claims for customers, it was nothing but grief, almost everything was put down as wear and tear, a car with Trans out was stuck on the lift for days while they sent an assessor, read know nothing tit !!

And then it would take weeks of chasing to get an invoice settled !!

In the end I refused to do that work.

Amusing Warranty Tale:-

In Kent they almost always used to send the same "assessor" to us, and after his first visit I knew he was a numpty.

So one time, he turned up to view a Jaguar X Type 4X4 box which was stripped on the bench, I pointed to a pair of work benches, he went straight to the bench next to the Jag box and looked at an old BL Metro Auto all in bits  He then examined a few parts and said "Ah yes these Jaguar boxes are known for this, I can see the problem straight away" he went away and rejected the claim on wear and tear !!

I phoned "Warranties are us" or whoever TF they were and they were highly embarrased and did actually pay the claim in that instance !!

Why?

its an awful lot of work for £160 (which you’ve basically conned the warranty company out of anyway) when you could be spending your time sourcing/selling stock.

Then there’s the aggravation side of dealing with the grumpy customer. Each to their own but to me a third party warranty is something you use to insure yourself against paying out. They should deal with it all.

Spot on. Warranty Assist allow you to add “cover from day one” for a small increase so I use these on anything I feel I might be at more risk on. Other than that I pay Lawgistics £15 per unit to handle the admin side of the claim and I pay for the repairs and do my best to keep the customers happy.

An awful lot of work? whole process takes 20 minutes out of my day...and as far as "conning the warranty company" do you think if he had gone direct to an indie they would have done the parts at cost and offered a 20% off their labour rate because they are dealing with a warranty company?....NO its business....As you say each to their own and it works for me and probably sticks a couple of grand on me bottom line every year.

Sometimes you just need to see it for what it is and wake up and take note.

I spent 5 figures before seeing it for what it is.
