Will the Yes vote in Scotland be good or bad for us ?

A big sigh of relief this morning from us as the Better together wins through. I never thought I would ever say that I'm glad to be still dealing with the DVLA :-) -
Will the Yes vote in Scotland be good or bad for us ?
jimreidvehicle replied to Wheelerdealer1's topic in General Dealer Chat
The Scottish referendum decision will be right to the wire and the reality of Independence is scary! We already buy 60%+ of our stock from England and the thought of this steady stream of cars coming to an end due to pricing or currency could in reality end our business! The DVLA will no longer be available for Scotland as they will no longer be part of the UK , so there could be re registration of vehicles going across the border this alone will be disastrous! And what about all our customers who have sign HP, PCP or lease deals accepting the fact that the car will not be moved outside the UK, a Scotland as an independent state WILL be outside the UK so all these customers are breaking the law. There is so much more to the couple if lines I have written here but I cannot see any benefit for Scotland or the rest of the UK us becoming independent! Jim -
DVLA update AT LAST! email reply received today
jimreidvehicle replied to jimreidvehicle's topic in General Dealer Chat
Gavin no problem, seemingly the NEW V317's will no longer have the part for serial numbers for tax discs and these forms will only be downloadable from the DVLA website as a pdf, using even more of my paper and ink ;-( -
DVLA update AT LAST! email reply received today
jimreidvehicle replied to jimreidvehicle's topic in General Dealer Chat
Gavin I asked that very question about having both cars insured at the same time to carry out a CT, but believe it or not since Dec 2013 we could get a car taxed at any post office without having valid insurance, it is no longer DVLA or the Post Offices responsibility to check for valid insurance it is the responsibility of the owner and driver of the car to ensure they are suitably insured before driving the car on the public highway. So for CT's there is no real change, down to the local PO with the green slip to get car road taxed then off with all the paperwork for the CT!! Jim -
DVLA update AT LAST! email reply received today
jimreidvehicle replied to jimreidvehicle's topic in General Dealer Chat
Andy there must be something! isn't it a shame that the DVLA haven't educated us dealers with webinars of the new automated system. This was their chance of getting things right a building bridges with the Motortrade and all they have down is muck it up again! Why not ask the people on the coal face, what happens on the coal face? Jim -
DVLA update AT LAST! email reply received today
jimreidvehicle posted a topic in General Dealer Chat
As you all know I sent an email back on the 18th of August to clarify some points, here is their reply only this afternoon!!! Hope it helps. You can comment on this using the forum. AT LAST SOME CLARIFICATION .................A LONG AWAITED REPLY TO MY E-MAIL HOPE THIS HELPS................. Jim, Apologies for the delay in replying. Please see response below. I have previously emailed you with questions as spokesman for a Car Dealer Forum called Twitter Car Dealers http://twittercardealers.ning.com/ , however as October the 1st is nearly upon us I would like to gain some clarification on some points that don’t seem to be noted anywhere on the DVLA website or in any previous e-mail correspondence. I would be very gratefully if you can e-mail clarification of these points below:- • • Can you please confirm that the process by traders will not change when it comes to taking back a part exchange vehicle in terms of paperwork, currently we would assist the car owner by filling in section 9 (the yellow slip) of the V5c with our details and getting the customer and ourselves to sign the appropriate parts and our details, so the car can be ‘transferred to trade’ or ‘in trade’, rumour has it that instead of this the customer would have to SORN the vehicle. Can you clarify please? I can confirm that this is correct – the process for disposal/disposal to trade will not change and should remain as is from 1st October. On receipt of the disposal notification an automatic refund of vehicle tax will be issued to the previous keeper on record/Direct Debit details automatically cancelled. If the registered keeper is disposing of the vehicle into trade then no SORN is required. From the 20th October the process of disposing vehicles into the trade will also become electronic and further communications will be issued by the project nearer to the time. A SORN should only be made by a keeper who is in possession of a vehicle. • If a customer decides to purchase his lease/contract hire vehicle that he or she has been running for the last two years at what point does it become the responsibility of the new owner to tax? This is not clear. As soon as the customer purchases a vehicle and decides to become the registered keeper on DVLA records they must tax it immediately. They do not need to wait for the Registration Certificate (V5C) to be in their name to tax – and they can tax online at www.gov.uk/vehicletax using the V5C/2 section of the V5C, over the telephone on 0300 123 4321or at a from Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax. o If we sell a car that has come back at the beginning of the month and changes hands is the car still road taxed until the end of that month as the previous owner will only get a road tax refund on the whole month’s left on the road tax paid. No – as soon as the keeper on record (seller) notifies DVLA that they no longer have the vehicle the road tax will expire. The new keeper must tax immediately before driving the vehicle on the road. o If a Car Dealer is sitting with car’s in stock that have, current and valid road taxes on them what happens on October 1st as these car’s will be ‘in trade’ and have no current owner, who does the road tax rebate go to? As car dealers we have most likely accounted for the value of this tax disc whilst valuing the car, so will we receive the rebate or the last owner or will this money just disappear into the Government coffers? Any vehicle that is currently in the motor trade with a valid tax disc will continue to be taxed until the vehicle is sold. At the point the vehicle is sold, the current tax will terminate. No refund will be paid where the vehicle is recorded as in the motor trade. For any refund to be issued, there must be a registered keeper held DVLA records. This has been the case since 2009. o As a car dealer who likes to deliver a first class service to our customers we often road tax our customers new purchases on their behalf can we continue to do this or have the customers to organise payment themselves and road taxing? Dealers can still continue to tax a vehicle on the customers behalf using the V5C/2 section of the V5C either online at www.gov.uk/vehicletax using the V5C/2 section of the V5C over the telephone on 0300 123 4321 or at a from Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax. o Can you also explain what happens if a customer drops off their car but have lost their V5C, does this mean that they can apply for a new V5C or not as technically they are no longer the owners if they have part exchanged the car, also does this mean because the road tax cannot be redeemed is the car technically still road taxed? When disposing of a vehicle the customer should hand over the V5C to the dealer. If this is not available they should telephone DVLA or apply on a V62 form (Application for a Registration Certificate) for a duplicate V5C before the sale. Alternatively, if the vehicle sale has already taken place, the customer may notify the sale to DVLA in writing. For further information visit www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration On receipt of the seller’s notification, the vehicle tax will end and an automatic refund/cancellation of DD details (if applicable) will be issued to the name and address details held on DVLA records (the seller). o Please clarify what happens with cherished transfers when customers are transferring their personal number to another car they have purchased, do both cars have to be on the MID at the same time, does the customer get a full rebate if he is collecting one on the first of the month and part exchanging the other on the same day? Are both cars road taxed and when does the customer expect to see the rebate? If a customer is transferring a personal number from one vehicle onto a new vehicle, both vehicles must be correctly insured/taxed/SORN declared before the transfer can be processed. On receipt of the disposal details for the previous vehicle an automatic refund of vehicle tax will be issued to the customer details held on DVLA records for any remaining full paid months. The automatic refund should be issued to the customer within 6 weeks. o Cars that are ‘transferred to trade’ or ‘in trade’ and sitting on car dealer forecourts do they have to be on the MID now, as they cannot be used on the road without a road tax disc, do we just make sure that our Tarde Plates are on the MID? The motor insurance that was in force for the previous keeper will have been cancelled at the time the vehicle was transferred to the motor trade, regardless of the vehicle tax status. Discussing the terms of motor trade insurance is a matter between you and your insurance company. Hi Gavin yes well said, however there are loads of outstanding questions still to answer, I drafted an e-mail on Monday yet no reply with a number of questions that I feel have not been covered elsewhere, well done to the guys and girls at Car Dealer Magazine for sharing their interview, there are so many questions unanswered though and this will affect us in the Trade, confusion is NOT good and with just over a month to go I personally feel that things should be crystal clear by now and they are not

We have ordered 2 new sets of trade plates to add to the 2 sets we already own, to ensure we can continue to allow unaccompanied test drives (which is allowed on our insurance policy) at the moment normally two sets of plates are all that are required as a third of our stock will have some level of road tax left on it. These plates will also cover road tests for our Service Centre as without checking every car to ensure it is road taxed on the DVLA website you have no other way on ensuring you are legally covered and insured. Funnily enough my application for these extra plates were returned the other day as I had put in my application too early, instead of 10 days before the start date required I sent it 30days before, so penalised now for being organised!!!! We have had some feedback from DVLA but mostly it is about what is now on the website. Obviously the DVLA don't understand how many cars are road taxed on behalf of customers every week, what will happen if it is left to the customer themselves to do?, I think you will see MORE untaxed cars on the road as customers forget to organise their own road tax before collecting their used car and guess who will be blamed!!!!!! Now we are only a small Car Dealer with about 50-60 cars normally in stock, however a quick count of the value of tax discs we have on stock cars we have that we sell along with the car amounts to £2300! This has real value to us as we build a cars sakes deal, negotiating what is left on the customers part ex also comes into it! My biggest fear is the 'transfer to trade' status, will this change? There are strong rumours that instead of 'transfer to trade' we have two choices, road tax the car and register it in our name, which puts another owner on the car, so not only do you have the cost of the tax but also the devaluing of the car based on owners OR we have to SORN it, which means it should not be used on the public highway so extra trade plates are required to drive these! The ONLY saving grace seems to be the fact that we will no longer have the admin of registering all road taxed cars onto the MID, or have I missed something? So we have the Scottish Independence Referendum in Sept, the DVLA debacle in Oct and FCA registration in Dec.........I remember when I had time to sell cars :-/ Jim

After the huge success we have had with our now Sales Manager -Phil (25) and our salesman Andy (22)we have decided to recruit yet another 'Junior Sales Assistant' or what I would call an 'Apprentice' however as there is NO recognised apprenticeships for Car Sales in Scotland this new start will do all this hard work and training without any recognition from the SVQ. According to the IMI , who I contacted there are apprenticeships available in England and Wales but not Scotland and even the ones in England and Wales have a very poor uptake! Why is that the case? Training young people to sell is not that hard, if you get them at an early age you can mould them to the way 'we do things' and they are very easy to adopt change and pick up processes. What do other non-franchise independents do? Is it the case that they take on 'salespeople' that have been 'round the block'? or are they training youngsters? Hopefully Liam, is as successful as Phil and Andy have been as I will be a very happy man if that is the case.

We are based in Aberdeenshire, where quite a bit of our business comes from customers employed in the oil industry. If they are office based it tends to be flex time and if it's offshore it's 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, although there are the Mon-Sat group, but we do presentations at customers work if they can't come in within opening times.

It's great to get feedback on here, but it also goes to show that although we are all the same (car dealers) we are all very different (sizes of business, location, etc, etc) I agree with James about the Sunday trading laws, we don't have the same issue in Scotland as Tesco, Morrisons etc are all open for business , however food shopping is a necessity rather than a want to! On a Sunday , Car Dealerships, like furniture stores are an ideal place for the 'bored with nothing to do' brigade which we all have the fair share of over a weekend! On a Sunday we have a very large car boot sale (the biggest in Scotland I think) only 3 miles away from us, now I'm not knocking the sort of folk that go to car boot sales (because we all like a car boot) however this starts early in the morning with most 'lookers' making their way home around lunchtime , which just coincides with when we open for business and as we are on the 'scenic road' home for most visitors from Aberdeen with another 3 car dealerships close by, we are where most of these 'lookers' seem to end up, so you can imagine the frustration this causes , every Sunday! Now, it's not that we don't do any business on a Sunday, however after 26 years working weekends I feel that I have done my bit, but as I lead from the front I don't feel my sales team should have to work if I have decided enough is enough. To make it easier for customers we will continue to bend over backwards by offering a 'take the car to you' offer during the week and as always we are here from 8am -6.30pm, so I'm sure that we can accommodate most customers. I will say however in the motor trade if you opened 24 hours a day you would get people through the door, but why? If you work 24/7 you will get very rich, because you won't have time to spend it! However something that you can never get back is time, you can only spend every minute once! and you only have one life ;-) Time will tell, we will give it a try for 6 months and analyse. For the notebook, it has taken quite a bit of time to convince Andy (22) and Phil (24) to stop working on a Sunday, so it just goes to show, all youth are NOT the same

After many weeks of deliberation about closing on a Sunday we finally asked our Facebook followers how they would feel about us closing the sales department on a Sunday, I was amazed by the comments and the support from our customers about the proposed decision. See the comments https://www.facebook.com/jimreidvehicles So taking everything into consideration and to help the welfare of our staff and to improve the communication level within the company we have taken the almighty plunge and from September we will be closing all day every Sunday. The reason for posting this on our forum was to get YOUR view, what do you do? why ? and how do you benefit? Jim

For those of you who didn't manage to attend this year's 2020 Car Dealer Conference held at the stunning Rockingham Speedway, you missed a FANTASTIC event. For me personally it was chance to meet up with some long term Tweeters ( and Twitter Car Dealer Forum Members) that I had never managed to meet face to face before (it's always great to put a face to a Twitter name) and a chance to experience some of the latest forward thing technology that is already on the market and being presented on some of the stands at the Expo Hall. We were treated to breakfast, lunch and some very digestible presentations from some very impressive well known names in the industry. My Sales manager(and now son in law) Phil travelled down from Aberdeenshire for this event and we both came way in the knowledge that we would certainly attend an Car Dealer Event, as we had both thoroughly enjoyed it. I would just like to sign off by saying to the two James' & Andy and the rest of the Car Dealer Team that you should all be very proud of what you achieved at this event. Not only was it very well organised but there is also this very welcoming feeling that you receive from all your team. Having been in the trade now for 28 years you can imagine that I have attended my fair share of launches, test drives and motor trade events, but nothing beats a Car Dealer Mag organised event, you have this great way of putting everyone at easy and feel welcome which is a breath of fresh air compared with some other intimidating events run by pompous individuals who know nothing about the Motor Trade! WELL DONE guys! Roll on Next Year Jim
