    Hi DCS

What I am trying to understand is that you have been working as an employee at various franchise dealers, doing blazer and crimplene trouser clad jobs selling cars for 20 years. In the meantime, your family own a long established and probably well known small community petrol station and workshop business with additional space for 10 cars. Why have you been wasting your time working elsewhere, you should have been operating on your own 10 years ago. What an opportunity, established business, probably little or no rent or business rates to pay,you must be thousands out of pocket. There is plenty of work to do looking after and prepping 10 cars for sale.I would say get on with it and if you are any good, you will do at least 2 per week.....if not,you may have ‘main dealeritus’ which could prevent you from doing things like buying, valuing swappers and doing your own valeting.

So Good Luck and don’t be afraid to ask us guys when problems arise.

You’ve summed up nicely what I meant by the main dealer mentality!

9 times out of 10, I tax online for customers, they appreciate the added value and costs me nowt.  I then sort the V5 when they've left - again Online.

    Same.

A few going out over the weekend, have explained them all the situation; 2 have been given doc ref numbers to arrange themselves, the other 2 Ive set up before the cut off. Everyone’s happy and no headaches.

if I am going to do it I want to do it properly. I would like to know do many of you use an approved AA or RAC scheme? I have worked for Audi/Land Rover and customers do seem to have a great deal of faith in this. Obvs this is main dealer territory and would the end of the market I am looking at 2 to 7k cars even care that much?

Every car I am supplying has a yrs MOT and I often service before I see it out the door.

I am often told by people I work with that I am mad not to do it. You may say I am mad to try lol. Especially with the omnishambles that is brexit on the horizon.

Hope this wasn’t too long. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Sounds like you’re prepping the right way but all Id say if you’re going it alone with the sort of stuff you say, take your main dealer head off, it’s a totally different market to retail!

    Anyway, welcome and good luck!

    I also pay £50pm for a firm who manage my chat leads on my website, they have real time operators 24/7 and the conversations go something like this, this was 8pm midweek;

Visitor: Hi interested in BMW x5 3.0 petrol lpg was wondering if you do finance or cards and cash only thankyou
    Operator: Hi there
Operator: Let me help you with that.
Operator: Could you confirm if this is the vehicle of interest? 2005 54 BMW X5 3.0i SPORT £5,500
Visitor: Yes in black with good history black wheels, I can call in morning if that is ok
Operator: Sure you can contact us.
Operator: Do you have a vehicle that you would like valued for a part exchange?
Visitor: Ford Mondeo 2.0 tdci 2005 but some damage on rear bumper and age related marks, it is just a Mondeo lol
Operator: No problem, I'll ask my colleague to prepare a valuation for you. Could I take the mileage and registration of your exchange please?

    Visitor: No finance outstanding

That looks like a Visitor Chat transcript through Click Dealer?

We free trialled it for a month, but when I looked back at the transcripts none of the leads had actually dealt.

Might just have been me but the script from the operators side always looked a bit wooden and the sort of thing that would come from a foreign call centre?

Not sure how an non OEM would fit in the dash panel or suit "Volvo" owners... just my opinion, there are also some wiring interfaces made to get the steering controls working on more modern / upgraded units.. all down to cost and would invest in it unless youre smoking it for a good while..

My last S60 came with a decent spec Pioneer in the dash with the right surround but it just didn’t look like it was meant to be there; the previous keeper had obviously wanted Bluetooth and USB etc. They’d left the original unit in the boot though which went back in when the car got sold.

Nice to hear from someone offering advice instead of the recent influx of people asking to to spoon fed from more experianced dealers

    Most definitely this!

Raj, maybe worth visiting a couple of car dealers locally to you, face to face introduction and all that?

I suppose it really depends on how many buyers you want to attract, i’m assuming it’s something like a 540i or similar so won’t most buyers want all the toys working?

Just needs an AD brutal video special when it comes to sale time..

time of the year, too hot, sunspots, Brexit, World Cup, tides, Boris resigning, too much daylight, not enough bees.....just the usual excuses for this time of year.

Then it’ll be ‘they’re all on holiday / paying for their holiday / back from holiday skint / kids back to school / christmas is coming’

I love the motor trade excuse book!

Quiet here too, though have done two long term stickers this week which is always nice.

Sorry but I have to disagree with this and many of the other comments. AutoJacob is only getting problems from customers because he must be misdescribing them and/or inadequately advertising them.

I understand pitch men don’t want the hassle but I don’t mind selling a £1-200 p/x turd for £400 via eBay but the advert MUST BE BRUTAL and you MUST write on the advert that it’s sold for spares AND the buyer will be signing the following. Sold for repair, unroadworthy, no warranty given or implied & instructed to trailer away. Once you’ve looked the punter in the eye, told him you “don’t give a f***, it’s take it or leave it”, get them to read & sign your disclaimer they do NOT come back. Anyone getting complaints after that is probably making false promises & playing up the car, rather than playing it down.

As for crushing old bangers - no f***ing chance! There is ALWAYS someone for a few hundred quids worth of shite out there.

Controlling buyers expectations is the key here - any phone call asking about it’s reliability, “will it pass an MOT?”, “can you guarantee it’ll be fine for a few months”, “It’s for my daughter” etc., should be TOLD STRAIGHT & if they don’t understand then terminate the call forthwith.

100% agree, lost count of the amount of ebay auctions I’ve done over the years and can honestly say I’ve never had one come back.

With the trade being like it is these days surely it’s all about maximising profit opportunities rather than taking losses in an auction hall?

    £1390

To me, this is the art of this trade.

Using years of experience (and a bit of gut feeling!), seeing the value of something in its working clothes and polishing profit into it. It’s something all these newbies lack the experience or even the inititative to do as it’s much easier to sit online asking basic questions on a forum these days!

Nice natural backdrop somehow gives a look of I don't know, more approachable, more open, warm comfy a proper guy on tbe end of the phone, I'm searching for the right words.

Those clinical backdrops look good but don't give off friendly vibes.....maybe it's me:D

There was a dealer in the Midlands a few years ago using a sky background with cotswold stone on the ground, kind of like a beach effect colour scheme!

Old school that..... I'm sure Wynns or someone will sell you a bottle of goo 'specifically designed' for the job. Golden bullet in a bottle

    ..that wont work

‘Gearbox in a tin’ it’s called here. Along with their stop smoke product, ‘engine in a tin!’
