  1. Different strokes for different folks but i’ve found eBay to be useless for me so far.

    As for the difference between eBay MP and a bog standard as;

your photos are embedded in the advert.

You get a “showroom” which looks more profesh

you can have a link to your website on there

you create one listing and it gets uploaded to gumtree as well as ebay

There are various other little bits and pieces but i’ve found it performs dreadfully compared to AT.

Ebay have nowhere near the hits thag Gumtree have and Gumtree is a magnet for fucktards. Great for advertising crap at crap prices but not the place for a nice bit of clean stock. In other words, eBay gets less hits than the place that you don’t want hits from.

No doubt others are doing well from EBay but I can’t see me resubscribing. £398+ vat per month just isn’t returning the leads.

Good luck to those that are doing well from it.

i cant see why most traders wouldnt have there own code reader, ok, so your not mechanics, i understand, but its got to be helpful surely? tradexs excellent suggestion re coolant temp, is easily checked with a code reader that does live data [ very cheap nowadays] essential as a jump pack in my thoughts ?

You mean a hand held diagnostic machine? I've had a garage plug their diagnostic machine in and it returned nothing so in this instance I think those little DIY jobbies wouldn't have helped!

Also, cars throw a fault code if you fart in them. If it's a historical code that hasn't been cleared then in could give a false reading?

  3. I’ve taken my first foray into this sphere today and sold a fellow trader a car, I know it’s straight, i’m honest myself and expect others to be the same. That said however, i’m a realist and I know human behaviour can sometimes be deplorable. He came, saw the car, transferred the money and was happy. It should be that simple surely

I’m keen to utilise this resource for stocking as well as selling but are there good guys out there or not?

Any experienced good or bad are welcomed to help a newbie avoid as many mistakes as possible.

  4. That’s disgusting behaviour.

I had a misunderstanding today with a dealer who’s buying a car from me via AT mail. Not my misunderstanding but nonetheless it involved the poor chap having a wasted journey. I’ve offered to brim the tank of the car he’s buying when he comes back, just as a gesture. I don’t have to but it’s just good business to treat people well. Why do some people go out of their way to stitch fellow dealers out? I just don’t understand it.

Is it smoking when cold, blue/grey? Yes=Conrod possibly, but..

If no or no'ish=Be worth checking calibration data is entered correctly, so many f@ck this up not knowing the correct (odd?) way Ford do cylinder to injector numbering.

Also, does the engine bay smell of diesel exhaust gas, if yes then remove injectors, cut n clean their seats, fit new heat shields and refit.

Then do a bottle leak off just to be sure the injectors are serviceable...just because their is a bill...

Check coolant temp' is sane on real time scanner.

Diesels are more sensitive to any problems when cold.

    Good luck.

Forgot to mention, the different bhp engine's use different injectors too, they don't just use longer pulse times. Worth checking they are the right injectors;)

    Cheers mate.

No smoke, no smells of fumes. I’ll mention your suggestions to my garage and see what they can do. Fast running out of enthusiasm for it to be honest and will give it up as a bad job and learn an expensive lesson that I should basically give people £200 for a banger and not be frightened that they may cop the ‘ump and look elsewhere.

  6.  Yes I have definitely been caught napping on this one I think. Lesson learned etc.

I think i’ll give it a brush up and write a brutally honest advert and eBay it.

When it arrived it looked and sounded fine. The intention was to give it a good valet, put a years ticket on it and get £1k for it and sell it to the right buyer. I’ve definitely been tucked up. I’ll put it down to paying my dues to the game :)

I don't buy many from that section but whenever I have, it's always had issues even with a clean report. I guess that's why they end up at WBAC

Indeed. I just see a pile of metal that joe public knew was a lemon so they offed it for whatever they could get.

I know they aren’t all like that but I find if I treat them all the same i’m not disappointed!

Someone else can pay silly money for joe public’s lemons.

  8. Took one of these in chop reluctantly but I had a good margin in the sale so even if the chop fell off the face of the earth i’m still ahead.

The previous owner had the fuel injectors replaced at a cost of £900 6 weeks before he approached me with it so I knew I wasn’t in for plain sailing.

I took it into my usual garage as it was idling like a bag of shit, hunting. The garage have said it idles smoothly when it’s hot but rough as when cold. They suggest the fuel pump may need replacing but they can’t say for sure it will remedy it and I don’t want to play parts darts with it. As if only owes me £700 and will retail for £1500 I don’t mind ploughing £300 max in it to nick a few quid and get my money back but I don’t want it to turn into a hole in which I just keep pushing more money down.

Anyone got any experience of something similar with this year/Make/model?

    hi

i changed my mot station a few years back because of this

i suggest you do the same as some testers eventually get jealous that you are earning more than them is my guess

just like council workers who seem to all have a chip on their shoulder

Agreed. I push all my mechanical work on one garage and as a consequence I expect to be looked after. Nothing illegal of course I just don’t expect to have advisories that can be resolved with a wire brush and some hammerite.

  10. I’ve just picked up a nice clean A3 Black Ed, and there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever it’s had a remap done. I’ve driven my fair share of hot hatches and M cars to know a 2.0 TFSI doesn’t drive this fast. It’s also had an aftermarket back box put on which sounds a bit droney at high speeds so not my thing but it will float plenty of boats.

Question is, how should I advertise this “feature”?

Clearly I can’t say it’s been remapped and now puts out xyz BHP as i’m sure some anal fucker will demand proof or worse trading standards will have an easy target on my back. Should I make no mention of it and tell the customer over the phone?

    Hiya Graham,

That's a lengthy way to say you don't like Auto Trader ! Would be interesting to see how one site compares to the other if you have left AT and the other hasn't.

I'm not sure why you knowing what other people pay is relevant though ? so i wouldn't hold you breath on that front.
I guess you friend is "EPV" who wrote a very similar reply on the other AT related thread about the "motor trade advertising union" ? personally i haven't heard if it before but the IMDA are having a crack at it so maybe speak to them? though what i would suggest is having a different startegy than complain about the cost of AT all the time

He’s **** all to do with me mush

I really don't understand this attitude or mentality?!

Just because something works (let's not forget we are paying for a service, so it should work!!), it shouldn't cost an absolute fortune, nor should we be happy with constant price rises!! All this b*llocks about if it works suck it up, if doesn't go elsewhere, I find bizarre!! Yes Autotrader works, which is why most of us stick with it, but a) it really shouldn't have to cost so much, and b they really don't need to be putting their prices up by so much....

Just because something works, doesn't mean we should have to pay through the nose for it!!!!

But that is ENTIRELY the point. Used correctly, it works. The fees are what they are. Are AT the only way of advertising a car? Far from it. Do you have to use them? Definitely not. They are a business and entitled to charge what they like.

AUTORAPER is what they should be called, back in 2012-2013 my friend and i started the "THE MOTOR TRADERS ADVERTISING UNION" I started this because at that time they were trying to get it to £15 per car per week,we beat them and the prise increase was canceled  and only a moderate rise was implemented, this is a cruel and unnecessary rise,in our area (Bristol) garages are shutting down,4 so far this month,if you are with auto trader its about being the cheapest and they advertise on you pages finance shutting down another of our revenue streams, a race to the bottom i call it.I WILL be starting this up again but i am not going to pay for it all AGAIN the last time it cost my friend and I .If you car dealers want to start a sustained attack plenty of bad press for Autotrader join, we need to stick together the last time our membership was up to over a 1000,Car Dealer Magazine took up the story and so did the Times i only stopped last time as i had a personal tragedy,Iam back on my feet and ready to do this again, if any of you want to join please send your Details to email avg@avg123 "ITS TO EASY TO DO NOTHING AND THEN MOAN"My stats for last month for leads were 2800ish google leads 700ish direct to my website about 90ish auto trader gumtree about 80 ish FOR FRACTION OF THE COST OF AUTOTRADER then ebay then aa.

    DON'T MOAN LETS STICK TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turn it in. If you don’t want to pay AT’s fees, don’t use them. It’s a business and not a public service.
