Hi everyone. Sorry I've been AWOL. Just a quick update and I'll get back to yoi later.

We paid for transportation to bring the car here to a BMW Specialist. Turns out the car had a misfire due to low fuel, 500 miles after we sold the car. So the car has either ran out of fuel or been driven on very low fuel. Fuelled up, engine primed, problem gone. The mechanic has been test driving the car for 2 days now with no issues whatsoever.

Am I right in wanting to ask the customer to reimburse us for transportation and mechanic fees? Considering there is no fault at all with the car, and the symptoms were simply down to the car having been left without fuel.

If they can't even afford to put fuel in it what do you think your chances are of getting any money back off them?

  2. I'm not surprised the phoned was ringing off the hook for £200 with 5 months MOT and drives well sounds like a bargain. There is always a market for extremely cheap cars but the problem is they are usually not the kind of people you want to be dealing with regularly.

  3. I see your point and I would agree about the morning as making drinks and chatting is clearly something you do before work on your own time, but in the evening I think clearing the place up is work time, why should they work until 5:15 then clear up on their own unpaid time?

It does drive me nuts when places don't open at the time they say they will though.  Doctors are terrible for this, if by some miracle you can get the first appointment of the day at 8:30 you will be lucky if they have even unlocked the doors by 8:35 and by the time you are booked in it is 8:40.        Banks and post offices are just as bad.

But anyway, I would be more interested in if they represent good value for money, don't take the piss too often and get the job done when it needs doing.

Counting minutes here and there would do my head in, I mean would you deduct their wages for toilet breaks under those circumstances?

  4. I don't employ anybody so I can't really comment on the legalities of the situation.  However from his perspective I guess he is just doing work in his free time to earn extra money and while I can understand your point of view I do struggle to see how you can stop him  unless you have some kind of clause about working for competitors in his employment contract?

I see what you are saying about sick pay should he get tired or injured but then again he could give up the second job and take up marathon running or sky diving for a hobby and you would still be on the hook if he ended up off work sick.

And from his perspective I guess he hasn't "taken" 30k from you he has earned it.

I think I would have a quiet  and friendly word about it explaining your conflict of interest concerns and see how he responds. End of the day he is getting paid well by you in a full time job so he shouldn't want to shit on his own doorstep. If he doesn't respond appropriately I think you would be well advised to see what the legal position is regarding letting him go.  If your T&Cs of employment are as good as you say you will have no problem finding a replacement.

  5. Too much hassle honestly........ They should pay the money into their bank and then pay by debit card or bank transfer.  Let them explain to the bank & HMRC how they happened to come across £26k in cash.

  6. Well I don't like their website much as the navigation bar kept popping up in my way and then the search result returned 'featured' cars 100%+ over the budget I had entered.   Initially I thought there is no way to set a minimum price, so I was sorting the results low to high ending up looking at a load of £99 finance adverts..... though I did eventually figure it out.  Also despite doing a used car search from the front page on the second page the 'new' and 'nearly new' boxes were still checked.

    Not very intuitive.

  7. I'm wondering what your policy on moving on stuff that has been sitting around a while.    For the average car at what point do you cut your losses, 1 month, 2 months, etc?

I would normally adjust the price to get it in new searches, take new photos, re-work the advert and so on, but every now and then something just sits around for no apparent reason.

It is a bit different if you have something a bit specialist or with a nice margin in it but when bog standard stuff sits around for too long it feels like you are just burning money really.

I have noticed no change whatsoever. I operate at the cheaper end of the market but people still need cars whether we are in the EU or not. Unless everyone is going to start getting the bus !

Long term who knows maybe a recession could be on the cards but we have no choice other than to get on with it.

Be British, have a cup of tea, keep calm and carry on..!

Yes but a lot of people probably wont want to commit to finance on the newer or more expensive end now.  There is too much uncertainty about how the exit will be managed, who will lead the government, if there will be another election... all those things are going to have an impact on jobs and interest rates.

From what I can see quite a few people voted out as a protest against the government, cuts to services, insane house prices and so on.... but a lot of those people are having regrets already because they didn't expect out to actually win.    Even the leave side don't appear to have a plan and they are already going back on the promises they made about less immigration and more money to the NHS.

    Interesting times we live in.

Also anyone over the age of 60 shouldn't be allowed to vote as they tend to hold the most deep seated bigoted views and have little care for the mess they leave younger generation. Can't build house's here, no windfarms there, the list goes on!!!

I'm a long way away from 60  but I'm OUT.     What I find really irritating is the almost constant insinuation from people on the IN side that anyone voting leave must be bigoted, racist or whatever.   3rd post in on this thread and already it has happened.

I'm certainly not bigoted but I do feel by being part of the EU we have to give up too many powers that should be in the hands of our politicians and while immigration is not top of my list it is certainly true that we don't have a choice over EU immigration while we are part of this club.  I also feel voting leave will trigger a huge shift in British politics and business, yes some uncertainty and risk in the short time but in the long term I think it opens up a lot of opportunity for positive change.

Having said that I think remain will win by a comfortable margin as so called "project fear" has been incredibly strong.

This whole thing could have been avoided if we had been allowed a brake on immigration and if successive governments had done more to tackle the massive shortage of affordable housing (both private and council), school places in good schools, GP surgeries, etc.   Around my area they are infilling brownfield land with poor quality but highly expensive shoe box sized houses and not creating any additional infrastructure to support the community.

I had a guy drive 2 hours to see a little arosa this morning, one owner car with 28k car has been garaged all its life when i say its spotless it is 100% out of the box spotless, anyway its £1750 the guy drives 2 hours and then going over it for another hour plus he says he is going to see another one tomorrow which is £1700 done tripple the miles and in faded yellow mine is jet black and says thanks for showing it to me and heads off !!

Probably only had a £1000 budget and was hoping to knock down the price?     Though there are plenty of tight wads out there who do buy far inferior cars just to 'save' £50......

I mean it is a hazard of the job isn't it.  OP you need to relax about it anyway because if you are getting frustrated about it you could end up coming across as too pushy (or even worse, desperate) which will then scare of genuine buyers as well.

No, it's a totally fair observation and the truth is the estimations we put in place on advertising were probably lower than they should have been. I've recently run into this forum and rather than burn money on complete lost causes I thought I'd get some feedback. Balloons sounds a great idea, actually :)

That's what we're seeing. Our aim is to offer complete customer satisfaction through great service and demonstrate that through social advertising and reviews. It's not about a quick buck.

We'll definitely take you up on that, Steve. Thanks.

This is a laudable goal but it can be difficult to do this, especially as a new business  and many customers are shopping on the basis of price alone.  They search for a car priced low to high and then  still expect 5* service at the lowest price.  But if you can establish a good reputation locally there are a smaller number of customers out there that understand low price vs good value and will become repeat business  if you do it right.

Shouldn't be a problem soon - there's a fine (!) article in What Car telling Joe Public how to buy a car at auction, because that's where those nasty dealers buy their cars from and anyone can do it. They only sell them on to you for a vast profit, so you can 'cut out the middle man' buy buying from the auction direct. I sh*t you not. So that's where the VoucherCode lowballers will all be heading. Hooray!

    Here you go:

    buff.ly/1SruLtT

I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of 'how to' piece is actually sponsored by the auction companies themselves.   They really seem to want to attract private buyers and why not?  It is funny when you see they pay retail money and retain 0 consumer protection because it must be better than going to a nasty car dealer who dares to try and make a profit!

  14. I've seen low ball offers work when buying less desirable cars from motivated private sellers so I can understand a bit where the mentality comes from.  What I don't get is why people expect to pay trade for their new car and receive top retail price for their trade in.

It is definitely the google generation though.  Emails offering 50 - 60% of the advertised price are not uncommon in my experience.
