I am glad you find some sort of solace in the fact others are struggling as well but i’ve personally never understood that mentality. If i’m quiet for a week or two or even three I can’t say I think about it too much, three months is the timeframe to observe performance in my opinion. But anyway, so what if others are doing well or bad or average etc? There are people out there doing well, month on month, so i’d rather focus on that and aim to be one of them, than think “well that’s a relief, i’m not the only one who’s quiet” I mean, that doesn’t pay your bills does it?

If I were quiet, and nothing to do (prep, paperwork, price adjustments etc) i’d welcome it, go fishing or horse racing and enjoy it! But if it was raining and there was no racing and i’d been quiet for several weeks, i’d start looking at myself, what can I do differently? Could I rephotograph that car? Should I just cut it’s legs off and buy something else?

I’m doing “ok” this month and another two deals (highly likely) this month and i’ll do “very well” but if they don’t come and instead 4 deals come in the first week of July does that make June a failure, or is it just a month is too short to worry about performance?

Anyway, I hope you get a few more in the bag and in the meanwhile just find some joy in life. It’s too short.

    LIKE.

Plodding along over here, not great, but seen a lot worse in recent times, so I'll take it

  2. What about asphalt planings? We had it done at our storage yard, paid about £50 a ton. Keeps it looking relatively clean, isn't an arse ache when it rains and as above, its cheap

As I wrote yesterday I’ve yet to see an engineers report. By the sounds of it you aren’t going to see one either!

The sort of punter buying 15yr old hatchbacks is not the sort of person prepared to spend money on engineers reports.

Your customer is clearly a pillock. Do not enter into phone discussions. Do not communicate by text. Letters only. Do not communicate with the boyfriend - he has f.a. to do with the purchase.

The punter stinks of being a penniless twat & by the sound of it this saga has virtually ended because they’ve tripped themselves up a few times.

Tbh if they phoned me they’d be told “Letters only, now f.o. & don’t try taking the piss. Goodbye, do your best”.

I have to say BHM, your posts are single handedly what I look forward to reading the most!

  4. At 20 mate, you won't even get trade insurance for a new business, let alone PL or road risk. You are young but gain experience at an indy, selling/appraising/buying/prepping; it'll stand you in good stead to run your own shop. And in that time, you may realise that you're happier just working for someone rather than going out on your own.

Hope this helps and don't want to put a dampener on your plans, just my tuppence. Rish

  5. I'm now based in Petworth so not too far from you, I've got a guy who buys all my tat. Not my favourite person, but I can understand him when he talks, he pays me a fair price and I've never had any ballache with him in the few years I've dealt with him. By tat I mean the shite I don't want to retail myself, he's not a scrap dealer or breaker so doesn't buy crap to bin.

Drop me a PM if you're still looking and I'll dig out his number when I'm at work tomorrow.

  6. If you've got nothing documented, definitely give the money back. I had a shitty review when we first started with something similar to this, and it cost me more in time than the deposit was worth. Refund him and wish him all the best. Tis the season of goodwill and all that

    Cheers

Isn’t it a sad reflection on today’s society when you put a massive amount of effort into setting up something to support others only to be questioned as if “what’s in it for you?”

Amazing , personally and I can  speak on behalf of the other founders of the IMDA , we are doing this because we CAN, and we see this as a way to help save those who can’t save themselves.

Will it work? I certainly hope so!

But if all we do as an industry is continually moan with no positive action guess what , the prediction of 20% of all Independents going out of business within the next 5 years will become reality!

    For Passion Not For Profit

    Hi Jim

I've paid the fee for the sub, however don't know where I need to send this form into? Please advise.

In my view, a lot of my family are in business and from independent financial advisors and accountants to bakers and shopkeepers, everyone has some sort of trade group that is able to speak for its members and holds some sway in the way things are done. Not saying will change overnight, but I do think it's a good idea.

There are people that will disagree with my POV and that's healthy debate, after all, we are all independents. But I think we share the same core values; to provide a decent service and stock, to get paid, and to be treated respectfully.

    Morning all!

Don't know what happened above, but Allstars, only you can answer the questions you're asking.

AT, eBay, Gumtree, motors and whoever work differently for all traders. Me personally, I've taken the time to check what actually costs me more leads wise and where the footfall is driven by. This means that, for me, getting shot of AT is just something that I can't afford to do, and I don't much want to either.

Have you ever tried selling different gear?

  9. Was in Blackbushe today, earmarked roughly 50 that were decent and worth having a bid on. All sold, the lowest being cap clean money (grade 5). Bought myself a sausage roll and a ribena and came home empty handed.
