Bang on that Matt, control the sale and don't let them control it, had it yesterday with a battered 05 vivaro, the cheeky fooker was quite forceful and wanted me to tax it and leave it on my insurance so he could use it for a fishing competition this weekend then added I could take it off Monday as he'll be parking it up to convert it... he didn't grasp the fact it was only covered for accompanied test drives even if I wanted too and was genuinely shocked I wouldn't do that for him.

The blokes taking the piss, I feel like I’m this situation you have no choice to be blunt with people, if they don’t buy it someone else will

My worst customer (by worst I mean a chancer trying for a few quid back) is on the most expensive vehicle I’ve had in a while - a £12K commercial.

They might seems cheap to you but depending upon what you stock you’ll soon learn £2-5K is a lot of money to plenty of people.
Tbh the price bracket is irrelevant as arseholes, penny-pinchers & dreamers are attracted to all price ranges. However there are also plenty of nice, decent & pleasant people out there. The knack is sorting one from the other.

If I’m honest £2-5k is a lot of money to myself included.

arseholes are everywhere as long as they part their money and move on I’ll be happy

Christ!......I hadn't realised the test situation was that desperate. Explains why this 108 has be sat here two months. In normal times the 108/C1/Aygo have been fast movers for us.

this is the exact market I was planning on starting in first due to limited funds, only time will tell I guess

    Bloody hell!

Our customers from the NHS and the two universities are mostly pretty decent. We try to retain them by giving a discount on service on production of a staff card.  We get lots of recommends and also try to accommodate shift patterns (seems that some NHS staff work 12 hr shifts so they want to drop off early and pick up late, or vice versa).

On the subject of stock turnover, I think I read recently it was down to an average of 22 days - which is historically low. That's an average of course and very much depends on the vehicle and your local market. Our experience at the moment is that 1-3 year SUV/crossovers moves quickly. And a very tidy red 2014 GT86 within 5 minutes of it going live. City/first cars seem to be languishing a bit right now. Got a 108 and a Citigo both at over 2 months, which is a bit of a puzzle.  Many years ago in my early days in the trade I had an Alfasud Sprint Veloce - nice car but with vivid orange paint - it took root for about 18 months.... did sell eventually but probably a record for me.

Any idea where you read that? I’f it’s motor trade based I might be interested in having a read of their latest posts.

most of my stock I think will be up to 9 years old and preferably around the 3-5k mark so most SUV’s are out of the question. However an average of 22 days means (potentially) fresh new stock every month.

just a game of trial and error and building enough cash to try different markets. Either way it’s all fun!

  5. Thanks for the kind reply’s I guess it’s a game of trial and error, as I’m just part time I’ll just try autotrader and Facebook for now.

the plan is to sell the boring general cars ie ford, Renault vw Audi for no more than 5k, I’ve already got warrantywise setup to take care of that aspect of things.

I down a Land Rover so there’s no chance of me selling my spanner’s just yet.

  6. Hi guys, I’m moving away from the mechanic side of the trade and starting up as a part time trader.

on average how long does it take you to sell your stock? Do you get more leads from online enquiries or from your physical site?

     Thanks
