    Add Volvo, Kia, Hyundai, Scooby:D

Is that in the to avoid list? I always thought Volvos were generally all round reliable car. Would Kia not be quite safe with their 7year/100,000 mile transferable warranty?

Just thought, might be good if we can collate a particular reason why to avoid certain cars? Would be quite as a knowledge base.

  2. HI all,

Hope all and their businesses are doing well.

Just after a little advice/insight about cars without service history, particularly at auctions. Just wondered how you view/asses them in terms of worth, taking a risk/value. What factors do you consider when deciding to purchase or not?

Having recently started we buy most/all our vehicles at auction, but at the moment only purchase vehicles with service history, however, it seems no service history doesn't really put buyers of (at auction) so wondering if we are missing a trick!

    Thanks

The guys who struggle to buy don’t bid on enough. We would regularly target 70-80 cars in a day at various auctions but we might only buy 2 or 3.What a lot of people don’t understand is that if you have something ‘ provisionally sold’ to you it means ‘ provisionally bought ‘by you so just carry on bidding on other stuff as you can refuse the provisional one later if your bid is accepted.

I didn't know about this? I bid on something, won it provisionally, next thing I know I had an invoice. Not an issue as I wanted, but how , or what is the process for refusing a provisional refusal?  Haven't been doing this long so just asking for knowledge. Thanks

Yes same as you AA website etc, I use them and its good so far after they took over from motorway direct. Its free as well just have to put one paid for across every month. WMS seem ok compared to the others.

Are you saying if you use their website to advertise they give you warranty for free???

The way the online prices are going,it might be the contrarian buyers ( ungraded and grade 5 stuff ) that will score.Another thought,I think being an auction grading officer might prove to be a lucrative job ( know what I mean Harry ? )

While online cars are far too expensive  has anyone seen the price of commercials, several thousand over book !

We actually deal in commercials and yup, the price's people are paying are crazy, seriously wonder how they make anything!

For us long in the tooth traders there is no substitute for seeing and hearing cars in the flesh. You develop a good eye for sorting the wheat from the chaff. Online just doesn't cut it. And no, I don't trust the gradings. The savings and efficiencies benefit the auction house, not the buyer.

Oh I agree, there is no substitute for seeing and hearing in person, but at lest it creates a level playing field for all. I find i save a lot of time being able to buy online and arrange a collection.

  7. As someone who is new to the trade, have to say, I don't think i could have started at a better time, in terms of being able to buy online. I can carry on with my day job, and buy and reserve a time to collect, it's wonderful for efficiencies. As far as BCA go, looking out what things are selling for, why would they go back to a physical auction, even if the prices weren't silly, they are saving enough on not having their sites open to public as it is. For a buyer, guess it puts us on a level playing field.

In my Everyones opinion counts here mate a newbie or someone who has been at years after-all thats what its all about it here . Your also right you get a feel for customers and over time can tell the genuine ones .sometimes you will get people wanting to leave deposits other time some even want to pay in full other times you can tell if they say they will be back tomorrow you know they will be .

Good luck wish u loads of success in the future

Thanks Casper, I must say have found this forum extremely welcoming and helpful.

Thanks all, enjoyed reading all the feedback.

I will just issue a refund tomorrow morning and leave it at that. I completely agree that they are not the customers we want to be selling to.

Usually I would have taken the time on the day and properly explained that there was no fault with the pedal etc.

Unfortunately on that particular day I was alone in the yard and had a customer with a prior appointment  waiting on me to view something else & A third customer due about 30 minutes later.

I see where I made my mistake on this occasion and will hopefully not let it happen again.

I wouldn't worry too much bud, look at it all as a learning curve, good luck in the future.

  9. I've only recently been in the "game" so not sure if my opinion will count, however the few I've sold so far, they are valeted and mechanically inspected on arrival/before they go on sale.

Deposit, I don't take them, the way I see it, if they change their mind, less hassle for both, if they want it, they'll be back anyway.  I am a little flexible, i.e if some says they' ll be back tomorrow, i'll give them till midday next day.

With regards to the pedal, if you were confident there was no fault, you should have made it clear that is the way it is, or there is nothing to fix.

    We keeping learning though :-)

Pendragon online with a BCA description ? Good luck.I would only buy Pendragon stuff if I could see it,listen to it and smell it and it would still be a risk.

I was just using that as an example, but thanks.

  11. Hi guys, hope all are well.

So I've recently got access to BCA, the search function is pretty good, however, where i am struggling, is figuring out which sale channel the vehicle is being sold through. I though tracking a vehicles would automatically take you to the relevant sales channel i.e fleet, dealer 1/2/3, premium etc As an example, I tracked a car for sale by Pendragon, but when I go the sales catalogues , there's no sale called Pendragon?

Is it just me or are BCA not big on clear guides/instructions? I called them up the other day to ask for rates for silver/gold members and they said they don't "advertise/issue" them which i thought was strange.

    Many thanks

I think we had a case in early on line buying days when both of us with different log ins spotted a cheap car going through ( the way you do) and one was the underbidder while the other bought it....Just another cock up out of the many etc.

    Hahaha classic!

  13. Hi guys,

Hope everyone is well. I was just wondering, when you register on BCA and you can name additional buyers, does this mean you can both log on from the same account, so effectively bid in different auctions?

I did email BCA however,  haven't heard anything back.

    Thanks

What I would say to any new starter right now is the market is highly irrational so don't overpay for stock.

yeah, have defo picked up on that. Prob gives us good chance to practice in negotiating and learning the market.

Thanks to everyone for  all the advice.

It's all on the forum here somewhere, and yes I think there is a newbie guide done by CD Magazine, well worth it.

Answer this question honestly, it is not a trick question ...........

How many of the vehicles you have personally owned over the years have you made a profit on when you have sold them ?

    Just sayin ;)

Buying good stuff at rock bottom and completely "above board" is the only way for anyone to make money long term these days, I certainly wouldn't be starting a business right now with all the uncertainty so I wish you very good luck ;)

Thanks, I shall have trawl through see if I can find.

Honestly, I’ve never owned a car longer than a year or so and have only lost money on one (talking into account any maintenance/repairs I’ve had to do on any of them).

we saved up some Mahoney for this “venture” and obviously every business has its risks which we are prepared for. Initially, it doesn’t take a huge amount of capital so the intention is to start steady along our day jobs and see’ show it goes.

Personally, I think now is a pretty good time for a start up wanting to ease their way in.

The way we see it, if it doesn’t succeed, at least we’ve tried :-)

Exactly what Casper said, Welcome to the forum and good luck.

Where are you getting your stock from at the moment?

    Hi Frankieola, thanks.

With regards to us, we have literally just started (spent weeks reading through the forum), we have yet to buy our first vehicle, currently enquiring about a few, but scouring FB, Gumtree etc. we are researching, learning about values etc

I did read on here somewhere there was a "how to be a dealer guide" but can't seem to find the link if anyway could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

Just looked that up, exactly what i was looking for thanks

You to, drop me a PM if you have any questions no matter how daft you think they are :)

I do have another query that is not specifically car trade related.

But, when you create a business page for your business. Did you,

    a) created a business page (commerce) through your personal account

    or

    b) Setup a completely new facebook account?

    Hey Johny1980,

Thanks for the offer man, I may well do! Where are you based? We are down south in Reading.

We haven't set up any FB/websites as yet, we want to spend a little time understanding how things like auctions work, try to flip 1/2 cars at a time, do it slowly before we advertise as a business as such.  Besides, we have to wait until places like BCA open to allow us to attend to buy stock! With regards to facebook, either way , a business account has to be related to a personal account. Personally my facebook account and it's audience is extremely limited/restricted, so it wouldn't bother me linking the two.  It's just down to preference I guess.

I've just recently come across him, I can't say i am too impressed, he doesn't really give much in the way of "advice", it's more of a blog for him to "show off." Chris form flipping cars seems like he is genuinely happy to share his tips/ideas to help others get on.

Sorry my first post so Hi all!
