  1. As a home trader i would not give them a warranty, just prep the car, mot it make sure its safe, decide on what your fixing and not fixing ie: if the air con is not cold and you are not fixing it tell them it is and your not fixing it and that as they can see your not a garage this is where you live and if they want a warranty go buy from a garage and if they are not comfortable buying on them terms you are not comfortable selling to them or buy their own warranty themselves online obviously in a nice way. We always have the conversation about the fact i don't give an insurance backed warranty so there in none of this you did n't tell me. Write down the stuff you have told them don't work if anything on the appropriate paperwork get them to sign it and get on with your life. We all know that you can't take away the consumers rights but if you handle the customer in the right way you can limit your come backs, in over 10 years i have only refunded twice, one was a vw polo and the guy just got on my nerves so i gave him his money back and sold it to someone else for more and never heard from them again and another was a suzuki and on the way home a hose came off that when the lady was driving it home and she continued to drive it approx 20 miles and pretty much melted the engine on that (never seen anything like it) told the lady she should of pulled over straight away as she had destroyed the engine by keeping driving it, i felt sorry for her and we know if it went legal i am not going to stand a chance so gave her money back there and then, fitted a second hand engine and sold it to someone else (did not make any money on that one just about broke even)and moved on. I will say when buy something i prep it up to the standard i think i need to sell it at the price i want and never skimp on safety related items and am not afraid to tell the customer i am not doing anything, have contacted trading standards several time about instances where the customer is trying to take advantage of me and have found them quite informative. I will say i think this is the sort of job you are going to get a little bit of agro, it goes with the territory , i think if you are smart you can limit it quite a bit, but if you can't carry on when the fires are burning around you its perhaps not for you
  2. Maybe that's just a coincidence ?
  3. Just woundering what your views are on auction online buying and what's the minimum grading you would buy online. i buy most of what sell from auction and in person and anything from about £1500 upto £6000 but there is nothing worst than turning up and leaving empty handed, so was woundering do many of you buy online in stead of in person and if so what is the minimum grade would you buy this way, as I thinking I could just cover more car auction sites and just get it all delivered. i get if you only sell stuff say 18 months old but wondered how you fair with the older higher mileage stuff. or is just a case of if you buy this way you just pay your money and take your chances. has the grading lived up to you expectations.

    Unit Size

Thanks for the feedback it's much appreciated. If you don't made me asking what sort of size units do you work from as I can't see it paying with the extra expenses that will go along with it unless you have perhaps at least a dozen cars for sale. i am think I am properly going to need at least 150 square metre to accommodate that number of cars. just woundering what your thoughts are on this ?

    Unit Size

Thanks for the replys, I never thought about the freedom of information request, that's going in on Monday, I hope that gives me the names of the people who have informed on me. i can see this becoming interesting, I have not had any proper confrontion for a while. on another note what type of class of use does a unit need to be to sell cars from, the stuff I have seen is either warehouse or light industrial, what would that need changing to. i can see another battle looming?
  8. Just like to introduce my self and will give you a little back ground on my dilemma and i will apologise for my bad grammar and been unable to spell for toffee hence the reason i reckon i ended up in the motor trade. I worked in the motor trade for approx 25 years, main dealers for approx 15 years myself for approx 10 years trading from home etc for myself retailing a bit and trading a bit not making a fortune but a living and doing it at my pace and this is where the problem has begun, moved house approx 3 years ago you know the story better house nicer area and all that, got all the work out the way which took about a year and though well i will pick up where i left of and carry on doing a few from home, decent size drive, double garage and all that, can fit comfortably say 8 cars on my drive and thats when the letters from the council start turning up, not sure if any of you have been there but you know you start of by ignoring them then you get a few more, then the visits start and the bottom line is i am informed that if i do not stop the prosecution will start and i am informed i don't have a cat in hells chance of getting planing permission to operate this type of business from home where i live. I am obviously fairly certain some jobsworth of a neighbour has shopped me to the council, you know the sort of person thats all smiles to your face and is quite happy to stab you in the back. I could understand my neighbours being upset if the front of my house looked like a scrap yard but i sub-contract all the work out and none of it takes place on my drive, no price boards etc. You know the scenario view by appointment only, i was only selling 1 or 2 a week on a good week so not many visitors virtually everyone that came brought as everything was prepped and ready to go. I am sure they would of properly tried to dob me into the tax man etc but seeing as though i operate legitimately and pay all my dues and demands there is not a lot they can do there.I have operated from home because i have tried to keep my ex's as low as possible as everybody wants to put their hands in your pockets and help themselves so if it goes quite or i have decided to go on holiday for a few weeks its not a big deal. Whats the smallest size unit do you think you can get away with as i like working on my own and don't want to employ anyone as i prefer just using sub contractors for the repair work, valeting etc. I have generally sold cars ranging from £1500 unto approx £6000 and i have been looking around where i live and there and there does not seem much available within an ok commuting distance. The few units that have come up are at the lower end price wise are approx £14k a year for approx 100 share metres which i am not convinced are big enough to make it pay. Just after your views really ideally from someone whose been there? I will say this is my first post and i have been reading the articles for a while and have laughed my socks of about some of the postings and antics i am sure being in the motor trade for and length of time warps your sense of humour. Sorry for the ramble but i have now got that of my chest and did n't want to jump straight to how big a unit to make it worthwhile for the extra expenses without giving you a little bit of background to how i have ended up where i am.
