I certainly didn't! So if you win at provisional, you can refuse it? How do you go about doing that?

I a tually dropped them some feedback on their app regarding some clarity on CAP pricing response below:

" The Cap Prices are based on what vehicles with similar spec, Mileage and condition have sold for in the auctions over the past 30 days.

I have passed your feedback on to our development team and this will help us to improve our service in the future."

So it seem the CAP pricing response any actually book CAP, it's their adopted own pricing! Glad I've learned that though. What annoys me is when a battered or total loss vehicle comes up that isn't making money the auctioneer always says "come on guys, books at XXX" now that is misleading! Especially for newbies.

Just go to the office and say take me off that car , simple

  2. Do you know that if you buy a car that is knocked down to you 'provisional' that you are at liberty to remove your bid at any time ?

Might be teaching some of you to suck eggs but that info could be useful to newbys in the game .

    Hi all,

Recently joined the forum after just reading through the vast number of threads posted for the previous year or so. Been in the trade professionally for 5+ years and in the car trade for 20+ years. Look forward to getting to know you all and taking in the very helpful information provided by the members as well as hopefully helping someone else out in the process!

    Thanks,

    Welcome .

Sorry had to be pointed out .

Face book warrior sells anything we have really that we don't want .

Buying is hard as you know , depends what you sell too . Auctions sell at retail prices plus fees . main dealers are who you know not what you know . Any other selling site is a joke , We buy any car gives public prices that's pretty high so PX is challenging then that little twat jumping about saying sell here and get a discount is trying my patience  . Privates are liars plus traveling round the UK is unfeasible looking at junk on peoples drives .

Not easy job at the moment

Thanks for the Typo David , can only blame the spellchucker ;)

I get what you are saying . I was surprised to see Autotrademail not functioning after it was such a powerful portal back in the day .

    Cheers .

These people claim to of been doing it since 1999 on their website but this indicates differently. http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://sellyourjamjar.co.uk but not every page on every website is captured by wayback time machine depending on whether robots are switched on or off on the website settings.

Good luck with yours the more of us who can help stop the greedy middlemen from ripping off the public and pushing up stock prices the better. Are you still owned by the same man who has had it since the start I think his name was Charles?

    Yep thats me .

I would have to disagree and here's why.

If you go by date alone then you could argue that the cash for cars market was created by the very first newspaper advert many years ago by a dealer simply saying in his advert "we buy cars for cash". Now in 2001 your website did advertise that you where the UK's number 1 buyer of quality used cars and that you had clients waiting from all over the UK. Correct me if I'm wrong but that sounds to me like you were buying off the public and selling to the trade therefore being a middleman.

IMO for the cash for cars market to be truly created there came a moment when something happened that was a game changer and that was when the concept of cellyourcar, a concept that your own website chose to adopt in 2013 when you went from the UK's number 1 buyer of quality used cars to helping members of the public find a trade buyer for their car, something cellyourcar was doing back in 2005. Cellyourcar had the vision of the market for us all to have a piece of the cake but sadly it introduced the big boys to it who were not happy with a piece of the cake they wanted it all for themselves and had the huge budgets to start up their own cash for cars websites and make it the unfair place that it is today by creating even bigger middlemen than ever before.

The next game changer in the cash for cars market is just around the corner I wonder how many more will try and copy the concept?

    Disagree with what ?

I simply pointed out that we were around before the example you quoted. In fact we were the original online car buyers .......unless you know different of course

Good luck with your new venture .

  8. Well the other option is stop using AT if you don't like what they are offering, but as i say things usually even themselves out but again i agree that AT is not helping, be interesting to see where things go with Motors v AT over the next few years,

One thing will never change though, if you have the right car in the right colour and spec with sensible mileage and it is presented well with good provenance it will sell ................. at a price !  :)

  9. On the other side of the coin most of the public are entering there details into WBAC or similar portals and getting there plug knocked in with the part exchanges so its swings and roundabouts and the skill is as always buying the best stock you can at the best possible price, if the customer wants to buy a particular car and he cannot find one at that price quoted by auto trader then he will have to shell out to get his desired choice however i do take the point regarding AT but usually things will even themselves out eventually until then "who dares wins Rodders" ;)

  10. If we had the answer you could chose to open around the busy times instead of sitting there 7 days a week hoping for some footfall, Historically in my experience this week in between Xmas and the New year can be quite busy but i think the weather holds the key at the moment, usually around the second week in January things start picking up causing trade prices to escalate also, all you can do is make sure everything is ready for the elusive customer when they arrive, all documentation available and the car presented as well as you can, now get off your backsides and clear all the snow of that stock

  11. I have been buying and selling cars for over 35 years and discrepancies regarding valuations have been the same for all that time and not much has changed IMO, back in the day you had Glass's and then CAP emerged as a competitor also we had the retail customer turning up with his Parkers guide in his hand, Now we have valuations available from a whole host of sources, Manheim also have a new system using live data but at the end of the day valuations are all subjective, and can even differ from region to region although this is less apparent now in the digital era,

At the end of the day you make your own judgement using your chosen valuation tool and "earn or learn" as we used to say . Nobody can value every car the same and rightly so, thats what makes this business different to many others because there are so many variables . If you look at Sytners Auction site for an example i have seen a desirable car go on sale at £x only to see the car sell for another 3-4k ??  obviously the customer has accepted Sytners valuation when he or she part exchanged the car .

  12. Does there Company name start with S ?

I don't mind saying that every time i have bid on cars belonging to the Sinclair group ( not saying this is whom Umesh is referring to )   :)  i have never had a response so stopped trying .

ATM will not reprimand or ban a dealer that are supplying them with stock, they can do without small dealers but the source of stock is something they will not jeopardise

  13. Very , very annoyed with a fellow motor dealer on ATM this morning!

BIG group – 308 Favourites (IF That means anything these days! ) Typically they always put ‘offers over’ never a price, cars are physical – never get through on the phone to give a price and buy so have to simply email a bid and hope for the best. Very annoying at times as a conversation would be easier and you know if you’ve bought it or not.

I’ve never had a reply back even when I’ve asked a couple of days later if I own or not! Last week I bid on a Passat and on the email I put ‘Offer is valid until close of business 17th March’  yesterday afternoon I got an email ‘ is it too late’  I replied No , is the car down to me? “Yes – here are the contact details of the branch where the car isâ€

I emailed both (Group seller & sales manager at branch) so say I have a driver who can collect this morning, please email invoice, bank details etc.

This morning no emails or faxes !  rang the dealer left message with receptionist to say PLEASE – can someone organise invoice etc as I don’t want the driver hanging around.

Just got a call to say “ the group buyer had jumped the gun – they got a lot more than I’d offered –sorry† !!!

Apparently they had a conversation last night /late pm about it ? so why not make a call or email me then – WHY wait until I’m chasing them ? The driver could have been there this morning at 8.00am waiting as I have a confirmation it’s down to me!

How unprofessional ? and as for the 308 Favourites ..........

Does there Company name start with S ?
