  1. I can't see anything wrong with your adverts Anglo, but I would probably agree with what BHM touched on. Nine grand for a 10 year old CRV just sounds a lot of money to me, when people could go out and buy this IX35 on a 16 plate with warranty until next March:

I'm not saying that your cars are overpriced, just that they seem high in the book for what they are. You could also do with a drop of snow, always helps with 4x4 sales!!

This guy is filling the streets up round my unit some days I can’t get my van in

That's very frustrating Peter. Can you furnish us with a bit more information, as you haven't really told us much?

When you say on the streets do you mean a public highway, or is it private land?

  3. This gets asked a lot Jay which is probably why you've had little response, the answer is it's different for everyone. I use Autotrader, Ebay and Facebook Marketplace.

You can't beat Autotrader (unfortunately) but they are very expensive, Ebay is around £220 a month so I only have to sell a few cars a year to make it pay which it does as I regularly sell cars on there. Then Facebook is £25 a month, which is neither here nor there and I have sold a full fat car on there so it's more than paid for itself. Facebook is still in early days but it does seem to get a good response for cheap part ex's.

You just have to try them yourself and see which works for you.

write a letter to the DVLA explaining who you are, the fact you have trade plates and the vehicle was being used in conjunction with your job in the motor trade. Quote your plate numbers.

    Afternoon All

I've been caught out. 10 year old well loaded VW which was purchased from auction, 2 owners, last owner for past 8 years . 60k miles showing but miles were not warranted. Spent a good 30 mins checking the car out and checked physical history before bidding - mileages tally nicely in the service book as do the mileages on the MOT history. HPI report all good. Interior firm and fresh with no excessive wear and the car drives great, nice and tight. Stuck it through my workshop for a major service but a fault appeared which needed a main dealer repair. Booked it into the local main dealer, gave them the current mileage and they told me it cannot be right. They saw the car in August 2013 at 98k and September 2013 at 97k, so it's lost 1000 miles in a month; I'm guessing the car has done at least 130k, possibly a lot more. Spoke to the auction and they're not interested.

Naturally I'm not going to retail it and it has been sent to auction. I'm not overly bothered about the loss, I'll chalk it up to experience. My question is, apart from contacting a main dealer prior to purchase to see what records they have, it there anything else I could have done to prevent this?

All comments welcome, good or bad.

    Merry Xmas to all

    Hi 15,

I believe that whoever has entered that car in to the auction has committed an offence by offering for sale a clocked car, without carrying out their due diligence and checking that the mileage is correct. As you did ;).

The problem you have now is if you stick it back in the block you'll have to declare it and blow your bollocks off, if you don't declare it you'll be committing an offence.

I would get something in writing regarding the mileage from the VW dealer and take it to the auction, remember your argument is with the vendor and not the auction house. Ask them to pass on your information and see if they will change their mind and refund you.

If they still won't play ball then Trading Standards are extremely helpful, I had a similar situation with a clocked car and the auction/vendor wouldn't play ball. Two days after my call to TS, I was given a full refund from the main agent including my auction costs. Trading Standards are there to help us too.

I think the unsolved burglary rate is about 97%.The Police will probably know who is responsible but to bring a prosecution ( which costs a lot of money ) they need to have a very good case to proceed. One thing you need to protect your premises is very strong security lighting ,it is a good deterrent.Tango Victor will know better but he seems to have deserted us

I agree with the plenty of lighting, I replaced all my HID lights with LED's over two years ago which cut my electricity bill by two thirds. The money I saved in the first year alone paid for the lights and the fitting.

I would also recommend having an internal siren and strobe light fitted, burglars don't like light or noise and the alarm in my small office is deafening so they won't be hanging around for long.

I am woundering if autotrader are afraid of getting left behind hence why they adopting these kind of price marker that some of the other competion use and are trying to stay relevant.

if they are some dominate why would they do this?

A girl at AT pretty much said that to me that they were doing it to keep up with their competitors, I did point out that they keep telling us they are number one so why are you copying the more inferior sites. I also mentioned that these other sites charge a lot less than they do and are they going to be reducing their prices as well to keep up with the competition, I think the irony was lost on her.

Another gripe is when something is shown as above average mileage, there is nothing to explain to the punter that the price indicator has taken this into account.

In my limited experience, AT has always been king for sales AFAIC but this month I've actually had more response from other sources for the first time ever.

Luckily I'm a buyer of low mileage so the majority of my cars are well below average mileage, but they seem to have their own system for judging average mileage as I have a 2014 Panda with 34k on the clock which I think is pretty reasonable but AT say it's 5,000 miles above average!!

I agree with your last statement too, which is why I reduced my Autotrader bill and will just swap my cars around. The number of sales from AT haven't increased to correspond with their price increases over the last couple of years, but I'm getting more from Ebay now and Facebook is starting to increase.

The car is a 2009 petrol Audi A3 with 103,000 miles, 4 months MOT which sold for £3400

    My question:

-Is a timing chain considered fair wear and tear? According to Audi they seem to be lifetime parts although they consider the lifetime of the car to be 8 years or 100,000- 150,000 miles (which it comes in excess of both of these).

-As work has been carried out (Service, potentially not filled up with enough oil etc.) would this void any claim he may have?

-if I accept the car back should I make a deduction for fair usage? (It was on the 28th day he raised the second round of issues).

-The car was sold at less than the private recommended sale value, trade is £4600 private book price is £4000 (according to a report by Parker’s) so he has realised a massive saving yet hopes to still reap the benefits of buying from a trader, which I’m not.

At a little bit of a loose end, any advice?

    Thanks in advance!!

As others have said welcome to our world, we all feel your pain here brother.

They must class a pension (s) as an income....thinking about it they should be a good risk?

Pension income should be a reliable revenue source, anyone can be made redundant tomorrow but that don't apply here.

NB:- I'm assuming pension (s) being the state and a decent private one too.

You're spot on. They have also generally paid off their mortgages too so have lot's of lovely equity in their houses, and plenty of disposable income. The only real outgoings they have is having lunch at garden centers or National Trust properties, and buying Werthers Originals.

The OP post said the sill, not sure if its linked to the chassis ? It's irrelevant anyway, because the buyer paid for it to be inspected and purchased on the basis of that professional inspection.

I think the damage to the sill is what the customer is complaining about now, but when asked what the original damage was the OP replied "It looked like light damage, only a ding on the passenger quarter to categorise it as a cat S".

As with a lot of these posts Arfur I think we only have a fraction of the story, in the OP he mentions the customer wants to reject because of a dent in the sill but later on he mentions that the car crabs so the customer must also have mentioned this at some point. So there is probably a lot more to this story that we don't yet know.

We don't know what was said in the inspection report or what kind of inspection it was, but what would a main dealer say? I'm not sure they would comment much further than saying the car has sustained accident damage and been repaired which the customer already knew, anything more than that could land them in a legal quagmire. The inspection might not have been much more than a mechanical inspection, which wouldn't have shown much up if anything on a 2,000 mile car.

Let me get this right...... this remorseful buyer wants to reject after paying to have it professionally independently inspected by Alfa themselves ? He also wants to do this even though its past 30 days just because hes just noticed a dent ?

Is this a wind up ????

I'm still trying to get my head around them writing off a £55k car for having a ding on the passenger quarter, and then also classing it as a category S meaning structural damage. Maybe his definition of a ding is different to mine?

  12. I think Dealer Portal has had a few issues today with the price markers, I put up a Fabia Auto today which it told me to buy yesterday for £2700 with their valuation and today when I put the price in at £3999 it said the retail value was £2500 and my car was £1500 overpriced!! Then it changed it's mind again and valued it correctly at £4600, and priced it as low which is where it should be.

Do these price markers actually make any difference though, I have a few cars priced as low but the phone isn't falling off the wall?

I was speaking to the proprietor of the Mitsubishi dealership that I mentioned earlier whose the majority of their cars are priced High/Fair and he wasn't too happy about it, one thing he did say worried me a little though. He mentioned reducing his prices across all of his stock to get rid of some of the markers, yet if all the main dealers start doing this then surely the average price will drop and the cars we have advertised with Good markers then become fair to high?

  13. This could actually be a blessing in disguise, not that I've suddenly started liking Autotrader the avaricious pricks. I've just been looking at our local main dealers secondhand stock on Autotrader and of course as I suspected the majority of their cars are priced high or fair, my local Mitsubishi dealer has a Shogun that's priced high and Autotrader are telling the customer it's £3,507 over priced!!! Good luck with that one.

I have just signed up to Ebay for 3 months. Given my AT bill is close to £1500, what's another £299? Might sell the odd couple a month, so will see. Total risk a grand, so far so shite.

I had the rep ring me today trying to get me to sign up with Gumtree as I'm already with Ebay, he probably wishes that he hadn't now. I let him get a few lines in then I asked him why would I want to advertise with their 3 different sites Ebay/Gumtree/Motors, his response was that people tend to look on 3 different sites when buying a car and if they see my cars on all 3 sites then that will assure the customer that I'm a bone fide motor dealer.

I mentioned my concerns about paying the same company three times for doing the same thing and that I thought they had a conflict of interests, and that I tried Gumtree and Motors before and they were rubbish so why would I want to advertise with them now.

I also said that I thought that Ebay had gone off the boil and this seemed to happen when they took on Gumtree, which is a shame as I thought they were making real headway against Autotrader. He couldn't really answer my points, and I mentioned I'd be rethinking Ebay when it comes around for renewal in May.

So it would be interesting to see how you get on.

I think you have a case here Matt910, I'm no mechanic but even I can see the wheels aren't round. There is much more tyre at the top of the wheel compared to the bottom, if you keep rolling it forwards until the thinner bit is at the top I'll show you what I mean. That's it keep going it's not at the top yet, keep going, keep going, still not there yet, keep going, bye bye Matt.
