LUK Clutch / DMF combo problems

Recommended Posts

An unusual one here as I suspect this isn’t a common issue but does anyone on here have first hand experience of problems with a brand new DMF?

We’ve just fitted a full 4pc clutch kit to a 2.2HDi C-Crosser due to the old (original) being worn out.

The new kit is all fine except the flywheel is rattling as bad as the old one - usual symptoms with it going quiet when the pedal is dipped. It sounds like it’s done 150,000 miles!

LUK have confirmed it’s the correct kit for the car and have given us a list of checks which includes removing the auxiliary belt to see if the crankshaft damper pulley is worn & thus transmitting vibrations along the crankshaft.

We are going to investigate next week but anyone have any suggestions?

Gearbox Input Shaft Bearing failure is common, rattle like a bastard, noise stops when clutch depressed, common problem.

I use LUK all the time, only ever had one problem 3 years ago, and that was a Concentric Cylinder came in the Kit, went pop 10 miles down the road ;)

I use these in MB's BMW's did HDI Pug recently all good, they are also, (as I'm sure you know), an OEM for many many Vehicle Manufacturers ;)

Having said all that never say never, there's always the odd dud with everything ;)

Agree with Dave here. We fit loads of LUK clutches and flywheels and have only had 1 problem over the past 5 years. It could be the flywheel isnt correct but personally i would also investigate other avenues.

BHM, it also must be noted that DMF rattle is sometimes cause by a running issue on the engine, injector over fuelling, misfire etc.

We we had a Mondeo 1.6 tdci with a noisy dmf, plus idling poorly. It had a high pressure pump fault that cured when fixed sorted both issues.

make sure it isnt the crankshaft damper pulley these are over £120 and could easily have been the original problem

what did it sound like when you turned engine off

no idea how you test it mind (smilie wassname)

Thanks for the comments, I’ll investigate further. I hope it’s the front vibration damper pulley but, in hindsight, the old flywheel we removed was absolutely totally & utterly knackered - hugely beyond wear limits in free play & fore/aft rock.

The mechanic & I had never seen a flywheel in such a condition so I’m wondering if it damaged the gearbox input shaft bearing.

Check gearbox mount! They look like they are fine but can cause the car to rattle! I just spent £900 on a merc dmfw and clutch! And it turned out to be a £90 job lol

:o

Thanks, but it’s quiet from cold for a couple of minutes. I’m going to run it by a gearbox specialist but as soon as I mentioned C-Crosser/Outlander he went into raptures telling me these Aisin Warner gearboxes are pisspoor and the gears work loose (or something similar). Same in Toyotas too apparently. The different car manufacturers specify slight variations & as is usually the case with parts for these Japanese parts it’s ‘dealer only’ with unspecified waiting times.

I’ll find out more tomorrow but my crystal ball is telling me this is destined for the retail market ‘as is’. In all my years of trading I’ve only ever had five Mitsubishi-related products and four have been MAJOR grief.

I might well consider changing my Gearbox Specialist if I were you .........................

I've never heard such a load of cock twaddle bollox in a long while ;)

Fair enough if it's got 200k mls + it could be a rattly gear, or broken tooth, but surely you'd not be retailing a 200k + ELV ??
