regardless of the warranty term you provide the CRA2015 is  really locking you into 6m as part of there consumer rights unless you can prove with your PDI paperwork that the fault was not there at the point of sale.

    It is? How?

Nice to read such a cheery posting :DFunny though, slight change of tack but I can’t get hold of a one-man brickie for a small weekend job, was told by a builder that no-one wants little cash jobs anymore BUT also he’s pig sick of visiting houses to give quotes to find the house has a ‘For Sale’ sign nailed to the garden fence or they have no intention of getting the work done. On top of that, as you say building material prices increase daily so he’ll give estimates, not quotes, and the punters think he’s taking the piss out of them. Now he knows how we feel!

I’m currently getting a few fitted wardrobes - the (small, local & friendly) company has installed the carcasses but now can’t afford the doors so want more money upfront to see them through “a tight spot” cos someone has (allegedly) bounced them for money on a big job - needless to say I’m reluctant to hand over more shilling to a company on the brink.

Anyway at these prices at my end of the market I’m due for a month off so you ain’t alone.

Today was an eye opener price-wise. I’ve seen everything from a 12yr old petrol Vectra on wheeltrims, a disastrous MOT (rotten subframes etc.), make exactly £1000 on the hammer to a six month old Defender, CAP Clean £41600, which made £62200.

I assume from those figures that new Defenders are a throw-the-book-away car, but scrap Vectras?

I know BHM, as a fellow old sweat, it's getting beyond a joke out there, indian territory. Bought one this week, not a gem either by any stretch bit, a few quid I wouldn't of had.

I've been selling since 1979, bikes and cars. I know and understand that as car dealers we are pre-programmed to moan and whinge, too many cars not enough customers/too few cars too many customers,  I will say that I've never seen a market like this...

Main agents, selling 12 year old crap thereby depleting stock on every level, margins a part time Gumtree pirate would turn their nose up at and, ever more needy and eye rolling customers.

This is one time I question not doing finance, never have and too late now. The only guys, I know, who are honestly doing ok, are nearly 100% strap.

I'm having  month off, I've a garage project to get out the ground.....if I can get the blocks, the bricks, the concrete, the roof trusses etc:P

Just to keep things even it's not just us, a builder mate of mine is having a bit of a rough month again.....pointless quoting for jobs as materials keep increasing, customers not prepared to buy materials upfront (builders/car dealers all out to rip everyone off) , a few now seriously rethinking projects due to ever increasing costs/employment worries, had two jobs cancelled coming up to Christmas.....rang and offered to do my garage to keep his guys busy between starts........ after pissing me about for 6 month though and after I've gone elsewhere, builders ehh:D

    Onwards and upwards though.

    Hi all,

    Hope everyone is doing well.

Had a question regarding part x's that we sell on. Are they also subject to warranty, (even if the min 3 month term)? We provide warranty with all our vehicles, it's just that I often seen vehicles being sold stating they are a part x. Was just wondering if there was any specific reason anyone would call out it was a partx?

    Thanks

I think you need to take some legal advice on your obligations as a motor traderB)

  5. I've 2 off CRV and 2 off Volvos here awaiting safety recalls......the Hondas are now three to four weeks, the Volvos are 10 weeks minimum......maybe looking at January.

I always check before purchase then got a little lazy last week and, now this has now bit me in the back side due to supply delays.

    Just for info' guys.

  6. Broken wheel trims, dented wings, filthy interiors, broken keys held together with masking tape, missing badges and decals, missing ripped/holed floormats it's all first form stuff but, so regularly seen.

Very odd to my mind, if they can't get the basics right, always makes me think are the brakes maxed out, rightly or wrongly;)

  7. I noticed that the local car supermarket is cutting the legs off of a lot of stock and, my dentman is quiet again. Odd times still and yet to come.

We all know this game is peaks and troughs so, onwards and upwards, fight the good fight.

Mate of mine who does the banger market under 2k is also slow, same with my van mate, his sales seemed to have fallen off of a cliff.

....I've given up working it out, some are flat out whilst, some are flat as f*uck, ffs it boils my brain.

    Indeed...  tell me about it!

We had one (motorbike copper) come to look at a Audi A4. Agreed to buy it. Comes back three days later to collect it. No drama at this point. Next day he turns up on his police bike claiming that when he first looked at the car and agreed to buy it, it had new Continentals all round. But when he checked after getting home they were 'old' tyres - accused us of swapping them! Obvious BS but he argued very aggressively for about an hour.

Another one last year bought a 2012 3-series for his wife. Came back after six months because it had developed the classic F30 steering knock. I offered to repair it FoC there and then - lift home for him, valet and deliver the car back. He was very aggressive - wanting full refund on the vehicle saying he and his mates would be "looking out for us" etc etc. I did think about making a formal complaint but decided against in the end.

Yet when we had our security gates broke open, attempted theft of a Focus ST - all on HD CCTV with a reg. no. captured, we couldn't even get any of them to look at the video. Bloody shambles!  The local area has turned into a cesspit in the last few years - like downtown Mogadishu - there is routine open drug dealing within 500 yds of the police station. Zero enforcement...

Up there with teachers and have dreadful 'no issue, drives lovely' part exs.....last one an Insignia owned by a husband and wife pair of coppers....

..... with no windscreen wipers.....yes, they stole the wipers during the deal, I ask you, how f*ucking cheap can you get?

    As Rory says

All used cars are Margin VAT when sold ,

Two types of purchase exist when you buy the car from a dealer .

1 Its sold as a margin car so you don't and cant claim VAT on THE PURCHASE.

2 Its VAT Qualifying car you purchased , eg some bought it for business purposes and will show a VAT element on your invoice . You still don't claim VAT

Either way you dont claim any VAT and sell the cars as a normal sale .

If you get a VAT qualifying car and another business wants to buy it , you can show the VAT element on your invoice to the customer so he can claim it back . That only happens on VAT qualifying stock . NOT Margin Stock

Any car can be sold on the Margin system . even VAT Qualifying cars .

This is where it is at mostly .

So you buy a car for £5,000 , Sell said car for £5,100 = Gross profit of £100 Minus margin VAT at 20% leaves you £83.33 net profit after Margin Vat

But you do claim VAT on any service parts , for that car which offsets the Margin VAT .

I hope you make a little more than the example of £100 by the way .

It does change with VANS as mostly they are sold on commercial basis which attracts a price + VAT when advertised unlike cars .

If a van is not commercial eg bought by a none registered VAT customer when new , then it reverts to MARGIN sale as per cars when sold used .

    Hope that helps .

That's the clearest explanation I've ever seenB)
