Apologies PH for us ‘oldies ‘ hijacking your topic ‘.

Got to say we used the Mercedes truck place at Stanningley Leeds these last 5 years, what a fantastic place, they had anything and everything in stock offered proper trade discounts and the service puts most other dealers to shame

Couldn't even get a discount from the Peugeot and Vauxhall place, joke

Say it again I'm glad I'm out

That would be right but mechanically it would have been good. You probably paid £100 for it ! About 25 years ago in a restaurant in Spain  I got talking to guy who said he had been the financial director for Datsun UK from day one. They sold thousands of 100A Cherry’s and this guy insisted that the total cost of new car warranty claims on the Cherry in one particular year amounted to under £1000 ?

A friend of mine only sold Cherry’s ,he had a small paint shop and having bought them for under £200  he then bodged them ( or resurrected them ) during the day and doorstepped them in the evenings for about £500.

Yes bought them repaired and welded them and if needed gave them a blow with sadolin with white spirit added, to be fair it was easier buying ford's Vauxhall and bl though as there were more dogs available in the line up Friday night at morley:D

We traded from a lovely old mill, not:lol:

He definitely did ! Do you remember the early Datsun Cherry’s and Sunny’s .They were cheap to buy, plentiful and brilliant sellers  although the wings and sills rotted like hell and needed bodging !………..past glories.

    Datsun 100a

    Now they were bad

We got one tested one Saturday morning and it passed, the tester had been to a party the night before

We got I back and realised it wasn't his finest hour as the inner wings weren't attached to the chassis rails

We spent 2 days welding it up

  4. It's actually disgraceful how many businesses are classed as private to get round the draconian one way ebay has become

Shame but I suppose you can't blame them the sellers

The new deal is Facebook marketplace but boy how are hmrc going to keep up on there

I sold a 16 plate grand scenic 1.5 diesel euro 6 80,000 miles and it was near mint for £5,995.

The bloke brought it back 4 weeks later parked it as close to the office and hobbled in when we were dealing with a customer threw the door open and said I"m not happy" in front of everyone.

I asked him what was wrong and he said his left rear tyre was 19 lbs pressure and he had to pump it up most mornings during the last week and his wiper blades were noisy and were both 27 inch blade type when one should be 24 inch and the other 30 inches. He said he had had to buy new blades himself and the rear blade was 12 inches but should be 13 inches.

I told him to go to the local tyre depot and get the tyre checked on my account as he clearly had picked up a slow puncture (it never deflated when it was at the pitch)

He then showed a you tube channel on his phone in front of my customer of how to clean out the windscreen drain scuttles saying also the carpet was damp.

I booked him in the next day and gave him a loan car and fixed it.

3 weeks later (last tuesday) it was minus 7 degrees and he came in again on saturday and spoke to my salesman in a very aggressive manner saying "I'm not happy" again as it didnt start immediatley on that  cold morning he had to crank it 2 or 3 times (probably wants a set of glowplugs but it was fine until then,

My salesman said did it start this morning and he said yes no problem and brought the phone out to show another you tube video about glow plugs, my salesman said I"m not a mechanic so the customer said he used to be a diesel mechanic asked me to phone him the next day as a matter of urgency as he was "not happy",

I am going to phone him and let him have both barrels about his rude attitude just turning up unannounced  moaning about childish things and tell him to bring the car back with all the paperwork as I don"t want him as a customer.

Some people are just downright rude and saying I"m not happy will get him nowhere - we sell cars not happiness, if he wants to be happy just fuck off to a comedy night.

The chap is a very boring wheezing  anorak trainspotting type old fat man on his last legs - hopefully he will have an accident  and do the world a favour

I told all my customers they were getting 7 days or your money back but didn't use it these last 10 years

He is clearly a moaner and I have to say he would have failed my attitude test and the car he wanted always got a major problem seconds before he came for another apraisal just before he said it will be cash you know  or we took a deposit on it only 10 minutes ago sir sorry about that, you must have passed him on the way in

Life was too short to help the cares in the comnunity

If they show signs  of pissing you off today then they will definitely be back if you bend and show weekness to them before during or after the sale

Some people live to create problem's

Currently in the club watching the snooker and enjoying retirement

Remember you are the captain and all customers need permission to board your vessel

    • Thanks 1

  6. He does right to retire early, I've worked the last year the govt stole off me and to be honest by 4.00pm most days I was wacked, hopefully he will indeed find lots to do because everyone this year has been saying what will you do once you go, well I won't have to get wet freezing cold and always chasing that sale will I, will I miss it? Yes but there comes a time when whilst you still feel reasonably fit to walk away and take the kings shilling

  7. I wouldn't do the deal as I insist prospective purchaser sees the car and l would then need a deposit

on paper you have done a distance sale that might be difficult to prove otherwise

I had exactly the same a few weeks back, a prospective customer was asking daily for a car I had but I was waiting for log book for, she offered full money for it unseen and told me she now lived 100 miles away, I declined any money and indeed she never completed the purchase

I think she was trying to get a distance sale out of me by deceit

    Sound familiar?

  8. Just had a chap looking at a car, he wanted to look at all the details so he can send them to his son so the son can inspect them, oh I said, what does your son do?

He's an ex police number plate recognition specialist he said

So I guess he got kicked out of the police and is now on gate 3 checking waggons in:D

I don't think I will be letting one of my beautiful horseless carriages go to those muppets

2 months, that’s not bad for DVLA ,try registering an ex MOD vehicle !

Ha, about 25 years ago I bought an isle of man car, even the manufacturer a small company called Vauxhall didn't know how to supply me with a certificate of conformity, I was back and forth with the dvla so much they remembered me, can't remember how long it all took but the tyres needed a dam good pumping when I finally got to be able to sell it:D

  10. My mot station are a mechanic down and lost the last one to a main dealer who offered 20g more to join them, I still can't get my head round that pay increase

I had to have the front ball joints replaced on the merc truck last month.,i didn't fancy doing them, got charged 400 nicker, I could have done it for 70, so we know who's paying these eye watering charges

I know mate it’s a nightmare. I can’t believe traders don’t have a leg to stand on though. Customers threaten with trading standards and we have to get our cars back on their say so. It’s ridiculous.

    But you dont

Give each and every car a fresh mot at point of sale by an independent mot station so no mates rules

Sort out any issues so car has no advisories for customers or trading standards to nit pick on unless obviously it's something like slight corrosion to brake hose ferrules or slight corrosion to front subframe, you wouldn't change these items but you would underseal or protect them

Have each and every car go through a comprehensive tick box pre delivery inspection

Have each and every car go on a 10 mile drive to confirm no problems

Do all this and you cut problems down by 99%

If you do then get a visit by trading standards or heaven forbid you go to the small claims court you can prove you did everything possible to sell a proper sorted car prior to sale and this goes in your favour because it shows you keep records and show due diligence to the trade we are in

Remember everyone loves us as they buy a car today but tomorrow if they even hear as much as a squeek tomorrow you are their enemy

Finally always keep business and pleasure separate if you like a nice quiet pint

  12. Bit confused you say car went with fresh mot then say its due april

Did you mot it in April and it was then stood till you sold it in july

If so discs could well be past their best and pads could delaminate if low

The customer either can't afford to run this car or is indeed frustrated by the issues raised, most of the cars I've sold this year sell for even more now so if it was one of mine I might just bite the bullet make a reduction for the mileage done since sold and arange a collection new pdi full service fresh mot and sell it again

It might mean that stuff at auction with a ‘ no docs ,get your own ‘ description will be a lot cheaper ! With a finance repo with no docs and still reg’d in the previous owners name,it could take months with DVLA to get a new reg doc !

I do buy this type of stuff if availabubble and yes often have to ring after the 5 weeks and then miracously it turns up 5 days later mmm

I'm currently waiting for a log book sent out by the dvla on the 4th and it's not arrived, I have visions of another trader being given it and he's thinking ha he can't sell that then

This is why I use the PO if they have been put in trade but this little luxury is about to be taken away

Oh well soon be out of this job and feet up:D

  14. Thanks

I don't watch the telly box but do follow the news so somehow I've missed this

I agree UK plc is firmly down the tubes, I even had to self diagnose to my doctor to get some much needed tablets last month, only thing is I'm now growing boobies as I told him the wrong symptoms

  15. Just been to the post office to tax a car and asked for some v62, s I got them but was advised they are struggling to get them  from the dvla because taxing at the post office is being stopped in april

I am awaiting a log book via dvla now 6 days overdue which is why I confirm some cars are in trade and then tax them for customers at the post office

What's going to happen come April and how come I found this out via the post office and not mainstream knowledge?

It's bad enough phoning or using webchat to get through to the dvla now as most of them are still working from home

    Comments please,

I wouldn’t risk buying older stuff with no description online. With physical auctions you get a close up feel of a car .In the distant past ( when cars were cheap to fix ),I would often buy non runners but only if the opening bidding was quick which usually meant they had been doctored. It is worth finding a physical auction with good main dealer vendors even if you have to travel long distances.

This has always been my principle

Years ago a team used to go to my preffered auction early and doctor the stuff they wanted and nick any service books, I knew these were the cars to buy so always outbid them and back at work a quick search of the car had the fully stamped books found and the bonnet opened with a long stick

They never knew that I knew

Sad thing is I found out only a week ago that 2 out of 3 of them  aren't with is anymore, nice guys too:(

So take life as it comes

  17. Helped someone this week who's windows wouldn't close I was just passing on a walk and I told them to take the battery clamp off for 10minutes,when I came back an hour later the windows were shut

Sometimes basic stuff can be a great help to remember

Then this week a customer decided to change his battery but connected it the wrong was round, nothing worked but the starter and the engine ran, that was an interesting one to suss out
