You can't take the car back under false pretences and then simply 'reverse the deal'. Name on the V5 is irrelevant. If your customer has bought and paid for the car then it belongs to them (and presumably there is a paper trail to prove it). If I've understood your post correctly then what you're proposing is basically theft and can land you in deep trouble. You would not stand a cat in hell's chance at SCC.

The mis-description is down to you. You are supposed to be the 'professional' and should check your listings carefully. If you make a mistake you have to take it on the chin.  The broken door handle is down to them.

A seven year old 500 auto is a grenade with the pin out. Those robotised manual boxes are a nightmare. Many didn't even work properly from the factory. I wouldn't want it back and I'd be keeping my fingers crossed for 6 months.

My advice is try to negotiate some sort of deal with the customer. Say £250 compensation for no CC and send them a handle to be fitted at their expense.

    Great advice

Sounds like there is more to the story than just a broken handle and cruise control

We would offer a good will gesture to keep the peace - You pay parts, they pay labour or vice versa. The part that has failed isn't brand new.

Before making any offers, make sure the car has been properly diagnosed so you're sure you aren't dealing with someone just trying to get a few ££ back.

If you do decide to do that, make sure you have a document written to state that the offer you make is a full and final settlement to repair the issue (especially if they use their own garage - misdiagnosis shouldn't hit you in the pocket).

    Couldn't have said it better

Today was an eye opener price-wise. I’ve seen everything from a 12yr old petrol Vectra on wheeltrims, a disastrous MOT (rotten subframes etc.), make exactly £1000 on the hammer to a six month old Defender, CAP Clean £41600, which made £62200.

I assume from those figures that new Defenders are a throw-the-book-away car, but scrap Vectras?

The biggest question is did you manage to get any stock?

  4. We has this couple of years back and great advice given by the lads on the forum. It's a nightmare, check the car is same colour also the number plates help alot as they will have different logos, wheels, if you're lucky it might not even be the same make or model. Good luck

Why would you not service and MOT everything you sell , Part of the inspection routine ,

I even service cars when they have been done last week , I want to know the oil and filters are top spec stuff not some ebay garbage parts . ,. Like brakes too strip clean , inspect , new pads and possible discs if needed . Advertise as done and show people the benefits .

But the real reason is YOU know its going to be ok ,

    Exactly

USE A V62 FORM , down load it from dvla , fill in VIN Number , Reg of car , New keeper details , and present at post office on sale day .

take it to post office with new keeper details on , if you have the previous keepers post code it might save you £25 , if not it will cost £25 .

V62 will also tax the car for the new keeper and create a new V5 in their name .

Business to business sale eg you to taxi man .

CRA doesn't apply , no warranty need be given as warranty is your choice .

Plus who in their right mind would warrant a taxi

Not a good idea to put a warranty on a taxi. Some of them can have 3 drivers and operate round the clock. What we always did was to guarantee they passed the taxi test which proved they were fit for purpose at the point of sale. The test had to get done within 7 days of purchase and experienced taxi drivers/ operators rarely objected to those terms of business and still don’t.

Thanks guys just as we thought.

  8. Any advice regarding this would be great and thanks in advance.

We have a hybrid car that someone down south wants to use as a uber aka taxi, just wondering if the warranty would be void. Just want to make customer aware before making travel arrangements. Sure this topic has been covered before but can't remember details

They have probably set up their own WhatsApp group where they can ‘ one up ‘each other like the usual auction ring group of bullshitters of old.I can imagine what it’s like if you post ‘how ya doing’ and in reply ‘ a bit quiet but did 9 on Monday ‘.How about margins ‘ still only netting 2 grand a unit ‘ .Then another ‘ wouldn’t get out of bed for less than 3 grand ‘. You have got to laugh.

Oh how I miss this talk at the auction houses, it was always full of this sort of crap but to be honest I really do miss the entertainment

Of course they can tax the car without insurance been able to do so for years now  .

Insurance is something the new owner has to do , Not us traders , We sell cars not tax and insurance .

Theres your car and paper work Mr/Mrs New owner , Tax it on the green slip , Thank you goodbye . Oh don't forget you need to insure it to drive it , Bye

I like a Modern Classic...but they can be a mixed bag.

Alfa’s seem to sell quickly with minimum hassle, BMW to....even if they are models which stretch the term Modern Classics to its very loosest extent.

However, I had a couple of apparently Bona Fide and very desirable “modern classics” up last year...

A Merc priced at 14k which I didn’t get so much as an enquiry on in 3 months.

A VW priced at 5k which attracted more time wasters and idiots that any car I have had, but still I couldn’t sell it.

    Sent both to auction.

    The Merc made 16.5k

    The VW made 5.5k

Might be worth a shot to stop all the idiots messaging and calling:)

How on Earth are shit 80’s & 90’s Fiestas/Escorts/Novas etc. worth what they sell for?
They were fucking shite even when new - ideal examples of how a front drive car should NOT handle. I don’t imagine 30ish years will have improved their pisspoor handling & inability to transmit modest horsepower to the road.

This exactly, but the Japanese cars were way ahead with build and reliability qualities. Not sure what to do with it to be honest, its uncertain times so might just took it away for a few more years and see what happens

  13. Hi all, hope you are all keeping safe and well.

Just curious on what the classic car market is like at the moment and what you all consider to be a classic car. We recently acquired a 1989  Honda crx 1.6 16v not the vtec model, the car is original and rust free never been welded and done a genuine 69000 miles. Thinking of selling in the summer or would you guys think its worth storing away. We know they have a following but its Japanese and just curious what you guys think. All comments appreciated.

    Thanks in advance
