How then do you deal with them slagging you off online?

Never, ever be scared of a bad review when a punter is in the wrong. Just respond and tell the truth in a cool and composed manner. A 1 star review with a good response from you will be looked at positively by anyone who reads it.

Do you turn down test drives? and how do you go about it?

I will do, and its not a matter of turning down test drives, its whether youve offered it or not. Most customers are appointed, so you can ask some questions before you even get them on site. I had one last week, he was booked in, had a quick look around and then asked for the test drive. I asked if he was happy with the condition of it and the price. He said he expected a discount. All my prices are fixed, I told him so, he was with his other half so they had a proper look round it then and a chat between themselves for 20 minutes. Then asked for a drive again because they thought it was ok for the money. Drive done, they paid for it and drove away.

You have to control them. Its your Insurance risk, your fuel, your re clean cost. Make sure all the ducks are in a row before the test drive, and it makes life easier. Some will always slip through. And be blunt about the purpose of the test drive; its not for you to find out how a focus (or whatever) drives, that was the manufacturers job x number of years ago. The purpose of this drive is for you to satisfy yourself theres no noises or problems. Thats my take on it anyway.

  4. If you're selling an M3 of course you are going to get the chancers turn up. have you sent someone packing you shouldnt have? you will never know. try a different tack. explain the test drive you will take them on is about 10 minutes, in mainly 30 and 40 mph zones, because the objective of the test drive is not to see what its like round the nurburgring, its to check its mechanically sound. after all, they know an m3 drives well, and will be more exciting than what they have at the moment, thats why they are here?

If they are still with you after that, then qualify them up fully and maybe you will sell them a car.

Bought a car from copart, they said they had v5 on file, never received it rang them and they said they’ve sent it out. Take it it has been lost so gonna have to pay £25 for a new 1 . Wanted to apply online to get it sooner but I think they need the previous keepers address to do that way, and I don’t know it .Have I got to send through the post and wait bout 4 weeks for it?

Is it worth asking copart for a copy of it? You'd like to think they have done that before sending it out, then you would have everything you need to tax it

Shes been sat in a bloody queue for 4 HOURS ticking over trying to get some of Asdas shite petrol in it .

Did she understand averages NO ,

    Bloody fool

    Gods sake ,

when are these boring sods of scammers going take a walk off a short pier

Ive just sent a message to James Baggott asking for him to remove the spam when it happens, might be an idea if some others follow suit. just click on his image on the post at the top of the page and it opens up the option to message him.

  7. Im not surprised its 'successful' if the savings are indeed as suggested. Theres always someone greedy enough to buy a cheap car, and not worry about the consequences until something actually goes wrong.

I'd have thought its only about dodging responsibilities. Most people reluctantly accept a 'fuck off' if that was implied to them at the start of the transaction, and for the few that don't, well, will it actually get as far as court?

Thanks for the reply, just starting out and have 4 cars up at the pitch , only selling under £5000 at the moment just trying to get my feet under the table. Finding customers are really hesitant to buy from a smaller site and will pay a lot more for a car with warranty. Don’t want to be offering to fix things for them as I’m sure they’ll be ringing up every time they get a flat tire or their washer fluid needs topping up. Had quotes from warrantywise which seem reasonable but was wondering if they’re actually any good or if I’m gonna have to pay for any issues anyway.

I use WMS Group, not bad, but as with all companies, a long list of exclusions. TBF they dont obsess about service history, I count an oil and filter change as a service and its never stopped a claim on that basis. But prep well in the first place. they all work off a burn rate, if you're claiming more than you're paying in, they are going to put your costs up. But it can be good for your cash flow at set up time, and it means its not you saying no to a customer, its someone else.

I sold a Porsche Cayenne turbo dealers had it on for £9,500 similar mileage so i put it on for £9,300 waited 3 months lowered price every month in the end all i got was £7,250.

This happen to all 5 cars I sold never got dealer price.

Are those high dealer priced cars really selling for that much? Or do they give up after 6 months and drop it off to auction?

Luckily i am buying cars at £1,500 below private sale price so still turning a healthy profit per car.

It doesnt seem to be sinking in does it. to be a dealer you need to offer back up. You either provide a warranty or 'self warrant' to re assure the customer. Who in their right mind is going to buy a cayenne from a plastic trader for near retail money?

So yes, we do sell for the price we advertise. We build a reputation for good aftersales cover. we get reviews. We pay tax, VAT, recon and valet the car. Many of us have a premise, and a website showing we have multiple cars for sale. It all provides confidence to the customer. Get all that, and you will get the extra money.

Till then, you will get what you're getting. Thats it, in a nutshell. How to be a trader that gets all the money. We dont hate you, you just havent heard or liked the answer we have given.

So I have now sold a few cars making £1,000 to £1,500 profit per sale I sold them all at private seller prices.

I was not able to achieve dealer prices even though i wait 3 months for a sale.

Which services do I need to add before becoming an official trader and securing a whole extra grand per sale?

I can add warranty from warranty wise and do 30 day returns only for major issues.

I cant offer finance just yet but its not been an issue as plenty people have brought cars from me for £10K cash.

By just adding these services I should be able to get an extra £1,000 to £2,000 profit per sale? Really?

If you're making that sort of margin after tax and VAT you are doing well and don't need to change anything. Because thats what a proper, reputable dealer does......

If you are making those margins after paying VAT and tax like a proper, reputable dealer does, you are doing well and have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your reply guys. We stock mostly 4x4’s, small cars and medium sized cars. This time last year we were smashing it but this round we’re so quite it’s unbelievable. Currently got 20x decent cars in stock which are not selling. We’re the cheapest on the autotrader so god knows what’s going on!

Dont just go cheap. Low price markers on AT can create suspicion amongst buyers. Go with great price, amend the ads, pictures in sunshine etc.

Not a bad crowd the £4/5 ,000 seem quite ordinary , not much expectations , usually a drive to work car or second car group

The 2k Crowd make me laugh , expecting a new car for what is effectively push bike  money , how very dare you sell that lot a car with used tyres .

Takes all sorts and the best bit of Advice as BHM stated , SORT OUT the customers YOU want  , Not the other way round or nightmares will follow you .

The best advice as above is deciding who YOU want to sell to, NOT letting idiots BUY FROM YOU. Arseholes in all price categories but if you sense champagne taste on lemonade money, be blunt and suggest they shop elsewhere. And never put yourself in a position where you are desperate for anyones money. Because they can smell it.

Hi guys, I’m moving away from the mechanic side of the trade and starting up as a part time trader.

on average how long does it take you to sell your stock? Do you get more leads from online enquiries or from your physical site?

     Thanks

when you say part time, do you mean you are continuing the mechanic side of things or are you doing something else so you can only do the sales part time?

I think your mechanical knowledge will help you, you can buy stuff where you know how to fix it which may scare others off. As David has said, different online channels work for different people, you will find one that works best for you by trial and error. there is no answer to the length of time to sell a car, but prep well, quickly and take good pics, know your prices and you will improve speed of sale.

Amazing. Thank you both so much. Accountant seems to be struggling with the volume I'm looking at trading with etc so the correct advice is invaluable.

You definitely need to find an accountant who knows what is going on with margin scheme as with cars it will make up 99.9% of your business. As said above, better to make an early swap than find out a year down the line he cant cope with it.

And if youre doing your own accounts data inputting, make sure you have margin compatible software.
